Insensitivity bordering on racism at Marlowe (and the food wasn't very good either)

I've stumbled across an incident that, if described accurately, is a shocking display of insensitivity. If it is any consolation to the Sikh gentleman who was refused service at Marlowe in Richmond Hill because of his turban, the consensus seems to be that he missed out on what would likely have been a very disappointing meal.

1 Steve, thanks for the post. We have been at the forefront of this issue. It is shocking to see something like this happen in Richmond Hill, a vibrant diverse city. I have personally spoken with the owner twice today and am waiting to hear what he plans to do to rectify this.

5 christianity and sikhism are two totally different religions. you have your beliefs we have ours. we're not talking about constituents of religion but about discrimination. It is unfair to be treated that way regardless of your faith, it is unfair to be denied due to your faith and beliefs especially in a very aware multicultural society.

Steve, I suspect you're right about such comments having more to do with frustration than bigotry. I'm also willing to bet that if this thread garners a lot of responses, most of them will be along those lines -unless you choose to start censoring. The RCMP episode, alluded to already, is still a sore point with a lot of Canadians (including me, to be honest) as are things such as the horrendously expensive -and even more horrendously biased- Human Rights Museum going up in Winnipeg. I'm as big a knuckle-dragging right-winger as you'll ever find, and I think it was wrong to deny the gent service in a restaurant. Having said that though, after spending decades of watching my tax dollars being spent to tell me that my ancestors never did anything right and that I'm a racist pig if I don't agree with that, I find my sympathy also being heavily taxed. This thread is basically poking at an open wound with a sharp stick. I hope the Sikh community can understand that, since some of their members are obviously following this discussion.

Melamine use standard practise in China -- Time to end this

The use of melamine as a means of selling substandard grain glutens as high quality stuff has been standard practise in China for years. Then so has been making soya sauce out of human hair instead of soy beans. And so is bleaching noodles white by using lead.

The list goes on. Time to cut the list short, I think.

3 Chinese communists will lie, cheat and steal ... all to enrich themselves while sending sh!t to the West as foodstuff. Look at the label of any packaged food and if you see "Imported by ...." don't buy it unless you know where it comes from, because more than likely it is from Asia where food standards are dubious.

5 Until the Pet Food companies can show me that absolutely NO ingredients from China end up in their food I will continue to use ONLY food from my Vet (I don't even trust that entirely). 7 JJJoseph, that's a good question. Melamine is just not that toxic, which is probably why it has been used in this way. Something changed -- either the melamine was altered, or something else was added that combined with melamine, or there is something else there that has yet to be detected, but melamine is the marker. Or maybe melamine has nothing to do with it, and this other other material, the real poison, got into the food some other way. Even if, in the worst case, melamine is really a red herring, the revelations are making people think about the quality of the food, and about the ways that quality is being faked.

8 Steve Janke ... yes we know that pet owners consider their animals to be part of their families if not their children, but what about contaminated Chinese foodstuff getting into the human food chain? My concern is that Gerber's is putting the contaminated Chinese rice protein into their baby foods, and that be more deleterious to infants than to adults eating the same sh!t...!!! We expect the federal government to protect us from such a possibility, and if we find out that this Chinese poison has been used for human food, then there will be hell to pay for it. I hope that the Harper government is taking precautionary measures to test stuff from China. I guess that buying Billion$ of Kyoto Carbon Credits from China may not be that popular now. They spike our food with poisons and now the Liberals want to buy international carbon credits from the same people .. no way !!

10 In reply to JJJoseph's question, I might add that perhaps the dyes used to custom colour the melamine to the foodstuff might be a factor that bears looking into. I'm not sure of what exactly goes into the makeup of caligraphy ink but I'm fairly certain its not intended for consumption. As I pointed out in an earlier post:These people have a way different Value system from us and in theirs, profit rules FIRST & FOREMOST.

It`s because your government has a little scam going where they buy the votes of farmers and naive urban nitwits by subsidizing the production of corn alcohol for mixing with gasoline. Drives up the price of grain, people in rich countries have to go halfway around the world to buy their dog food, and people in poor countries starve to death. And from an environmental standpoint it`ll be a disaster because more and more marginal land will be forced into food production, forests will be chopped down, and the high taxes on everything will force people to use dirty, old technology to till the land. It`s a great idea (for the politicians and bureaucrats). Best of all, like every other government intervention, the effects can be turned around and made to look like it was actually a LACK of government involvement that caused them, and the government (egged on by blogging cheerleaders and pundits) will come up with a whole host of new interventions which it claims will mitigate the effects of its previous interventions.

17 You are absouletly right that this stuff has been going on for years. What also has been going on for years is that Western importers are not stepping up to the plate and doing what is necessary (due diligence on from whom they are buying the food, real contracts to help assure quality, and testing, among other things) to protect the consumer. This is going to get far, far, worse before it starts getting better.

1 OK you convinced me. Clearly 4000 bureaucrats working for Health Canada and another god knows how many thousands of governmentopian knobs working in all the other federal departments who allegedly are looking out for our health and safety are not enough. Double their budgets, double their headcounts, and quadruple the number of pages in the accountability rulebook. And clearly, even though the melamine scam has now been exposed, private food importing companies are quite incapable of testing and rejecting tainted food all on their own - likewise food processors and grocery store chains. They're only profit-driven capitalists, and obviously it's in their best interest to poison all their customers and then go bankrupt after all the lawsuits and lost revenues. I mean, it's only logical for private companies to kill their customers and put themselves out of work, isn't it? All in all this scandal has exposed the utter stupidity and feebleness of government efforts to (1) manage farm policy, and (2) keep the food supply safe. But I'm kind of getting carried away with all the hype and hysteria, so let's just do what the loudest screamers want us to do and give the government a lot more money and power, OK?

2 Anyone who believes this is a new occurance is either dead or working for CFIA and Health Canada. How many pharmaceuticals and food stuffs have been implicated in illness and death of humans before and our inspectors wring their hands, kill off massive numbers of 'infected' or 'possibly infected' animals to make it look as if they are doing something? How many non-food items have been allowed into Canada that have proven unsafe and our 'inspectors' notice after the fact? We are living in a spin utopia--the only rule of thumb is that we are on our own in all matters. Buyer beware. Those that depend on the government or their numerous bureaucracies to 'protect' them will get what they deserve. No companies go bankrupt over things like this--they are above the law. Who has the resources to fight in court. This case is a prime example. China is being blamed but our 'inspectors' are the ones responsible for not 'inspecting'. There is no accountability.

Farhan Chak is snapping back. He is arguing that his prior views have changed and that the firearms charges were dropped. But that doesn't matter. When he applied as a Liberal Party candidate, he was obligated to tell the Liberal Party all this information. And it is clear that the Liberal Party did not know.

1 Chak said he is seeking a lawyer to pursue a complaint of defamation against the National Post. It seems to be the standard response for an embattled Liberal - to threaten a law suit. I hope the National Post stands firm.

2 Chak also has one characteristic which is all too typical of the modern big-L Liberal: the inability to really deal with his past. If Chak wants to keep his nomination, the best way to do that is to find something he's done, today, that (a) is just as "newsworthy" as his past history and (b) a far better "defining" characteristic of his persona today. Mind you, given that Mike Lake took the riding with 58.6 percent of the vote, and the Liberals only scored 21.1 percent, this is probably one of the ridings that Dion should be able to parachute in someone for his "qualified female" quota, since it's one of those "nothing to lose" ridings.

Recently bought a jar of Compliments sliced pickles from Price Chopper (Sobeys discount chain) for $1.47 and the competing brand, Bicks Yum Yums was $2.97 ... !!!! They were rotten pickles that had no crunch to them ... but FOOD FROM INDIA THE LAND OF STARVATION, ORPHANS AND LEPROSY ??? I think it's safe to assume that the Chinese glutens and proteins found their way into baby foods, Wonder Bread and McDonalds too.

1 Perhaps off topic...but then again... Some years back,I bought a large mechanic's bench vise for use in my garage shop. I priced some Nth American and Bitish made ones but because of the size and am't of use it would see I settled on a Chinese mainland one for less $$ I'll admit it wasn't pretty (Brits put out the best castings)but I figured the cheaper price offset the looks. A big vise is designed to hold big items an being big, should take a reasonable am't of abuse or so I thought. Well after having used it the first time the vibrations sent thru it made the Bondo(body filler) start to fall out onto my work bench. What a laugh! and what a lesson...it was of poor quality and made to look presentable ,though performance be damned. So I can see how some unscrupulous marketer might try to up the protein count for the sake of more profit. Dishonest as this sort of practice is,we are dealing with people with a different set of values,and not always a lot of honour.

3 Angry, thank you for continuing to follow this up, along with so many other of your topics. 'Anonymous' brings up something I have been thinking about as a result of this. I have just pulled a can of 'Great Value whole mushrooms' from Walmart and a tin of 'Club Supreme asparagus tips' made for I. Magid of Laval, QC, from a dollar store. Both of these state 'made in China.' There is a little argument going on in my head about whether or not I should put them in the garbage. The dog food problems have made me wonder how many other food products that aren't made in China are actually made with some input from some Chinese products and which of those may be contaminated. Recently labelling seems to have concentrated on the dietary aspects of the item rather than its origins. 4 Chak must have passed the Librano standards for candidacy, or he lied, which wouldn't matter in that Party. How the hell can the Libranos vote against Conservative environmental package when it's basically the same one they didn't GET DONE in a decade of governing. I was curious about whether it was sawed off or not, because posessing and especially using a weapon that is classed as prohibited is (or should be) a very serious offense. I just popped over to cherniaks to see what he had to say about this, strangely enough nothing yet.. judging by his recent posts his nose is too far up dions backside right now anyway..

15 This happened in 1993. There was no gun control at that time. The enabling legislation,C-68 was passed in 1995, coming into full effect in 2003. Back in the good old days,one had rifles etc hung on racks in the back windows of pick up trucks. What is illegal is to do what this guy with the same name as the candidate did. 1 Harper should quickly pull the plug on this Parliament and ask for an election so Canadians can decide which direction they want to go now .. Dion Liberals or Harper Conservatives. 3 Gordon O'Connor would not drop this at Committee and then issue a full-page press release if it were not fact. MacKay and Hillier obviously did not know. The question is: did Harper? None of the stories mention denials coming from the PMO. If Harper did know - and it is hard to believe he would not - the question is why MacKay and Hillier did not. But, I agree with His Jankiness. This is no way to run a government. It is almost as if there is no Chief of Staff at the PMO, or a Clerk of the PCO.

13 Two points: One, where ever possible,don't reinvent the wheel. The Brits have a protocol in place for this kind of situation and we don't hear their Left screaming- just copy it. and two, as for war crimes by association, ie, handing over prisoners to a regime that conducted acts like torture, I can't help but think of Kazemi, the Iranian-Canadian journalist that was tortured and killed by Iran. If no international crime came of that, our soldiers should have nothing to worry about.

4 Its time we had truth in packaging on packaged foods. All packaged foods, whether for humans or pets should be required to show the country of origin of all ingredients. I would happily avoid any foods from China - regardless of the cost. If they were smart our farm lobby would be pushing for this. plus - boycotting products from China, India, and Russia is the best way to lower Carbon Monoxide emissions.

5 Skuleman; I think you mean Carbon Dioxide. Carbon Dioxide or CO2 is the "global warming gas", Carbon Monoxide is a toxic by-product of combustion, specifically prevalent in oxygen lean combustion. Strangely enough boycotting products from China, India and Russia would probably lower both Carbon Dioxide and Carbon Monoxide emissions.

The prevailing wisdom has been that by offering a feed of teasers, more content is driven to a blog. But the evidence suggests that this is not the case, that more traffic will come if all the content is offered, and that there is more traffic to be had from even further search engine traffic.

This after Crupi had been caughting cooking the contracts already. You have to ask yourself why Crupi would take on such a risk. The most obvious answer is startlingly clear.

6 Canadian civil service was thoroughly corrupted by the past Liberal regimes. There was so much tax money collected that several hundrends of million$$$ could be easily misappropritated and not even noticed.
