When Paul Cheema, the prime suspect in the murder of his wife, Shemina Hirji, was found dead of a suicide, the story was essentially wrapped up.

Nevertheless, a lot of people seemed to think that Cheema was hounded by police who had no other suspects and so defaulted to the husband.

Not too long ago I spotted a news story that revealed why the police were interested in Cheema from the start.  It wasn't widely reported.

Husband of Shemina Hirji, Paul Cheema, is reported to have been arrested attempting to catch a flight to London. The Cheema family is alleged to have tried to give him cover for his getaway.

Update: Police are confirming the arrest of the "primary suspect" in the murder of Shemina Hirji.

Update: The arrested man has been released but remains a "primary suspect".

5 It was all too convenient that the husband was only "slightly" injured in the supposed home invasion and that this innocent victim lost her life. In the beginning, I dared not voice my suspension as I would undoubtably be called racist for my opinion. The whole thing stunk from the beginning. Then when I heard about his previous conviction I felt sick. I pray for justice. May she rest in peace.

8 The police might be building the case but were forced to move when it looked like Paul Cheema was running. Remember too that if there are accomplices, they may want Cheema free so that he can lead police to them. We'll learn more as the hours and days go by.

11 Brandy, why is it that when Canadians point out the obvious, we are branded racist. Yes it's true that murdering a spouse is not exclusive to one ethnic group. Would you not agree that in the majority of these cases, the husband is the murderer or the aggressor? The media lists the murder and beating cases in the past year perpetrated by members of the Indo-asian community. That list is incomplete as there have been many others. 12 The arrest of this individual doesn't surprise me, either. In any murder, the victim's spouse, partner or significant other is automatically a POTENTIAL suspect, because too often said spouse, partner or significant other is the perpetrator.

13 Penny Priddy: Pathetically Putrid Politician? As some of you may be aware, Penny Priddy is the MP for Surrey North. A.H.P. Matthews Elementary School where Shemina Hirji was Principal is located in her riding. Criminal law is under federal jurisdiction. So when a horrific murder happens, one would expect the Member of Parliament to strongly denounce violence, especially against women, and assure the public that the rule of law continues to be the paramount governing rule in Canada. One would especially expect this of a MP who was previously the provincial Minister of Women's Equality (1991 to 1996), provincial Minister for Children and Families (1996 to 199 , and has been involved with Surrey Women for Action. The tragic death of a school principal shocked and saddened the current provincial Minister of Education, Shirley Bond, and she issued a Statement of Support. However, Penny Priddy, who was provincial Minister of Education in 2000 appears to be unmoved by the tragedy. Her predecessor in office, the highly respected and formidable justice advocate, Chuck Cadman, must be rolling in his grave. Other politicians have stepped forward to express their support for Shemina Hirji. John Nuraney, the MLA for Burnaby-Willingdon appeared on television to praise Shemina's achievements as an educator and acknowledged her contribution as a volunteer on his election campaign. Surrey-Tynehead MLA Dave Hayer attended Hirji's funeral at the Burnaby Lake Jamatkhana to express his support. When it comes Shemina Hirji, justice is a critical issue. "Justice for Shemina Hirji" and "RIP Shemina Hirji", the Facebook groups created by Barb Pittman already have over 300 members. The deafening silence by MP Penny Priddy is highly troubling. There is some suggestion that she is overly reliant on the Sikh community for her political support and hence is overly-sensitive to commenting on the Hirji murder because of the possibility that it may offend Sikhs. Earlier, Terry Milewski, of the CBC reported on how Penny Priddy attended a Sikh Vaisakhi Day parade where a Sikh mass murderer was honoured as a hero. Talwinder Singh Parmar was the founder of the Babbar Khalsa, which is officially listed as a terrorist organization in Canada, the United States, the European Union, and India. She merely stated she was "disappointed" to hear what had happened but that "I don't regret going". As a Member of Parliament, Penny Priddy has an obligation to uphold the rule of law at all times. Her failure to denounce the violent way in which Shemina Hirji was murdered, and her failure to uphold the rule of law as the paramount governing rule in Canada raises many troubling questions. Certainly "pathetic" and "putrid" are two terms that come to mind in describing her conduct.

17 For one Brandy.. I will tell you right now, instead of running Barbs name thru the mud, maybe you should really read what she has said. She doesn't want that page to be used to slam and point fingers at Paul. We dont know what's going to happen in the comming weeks, and we dont know how she really feels. It's not fair for you to decide for her that she totally stands behind Paul. I stand behind him in a sense. Because I dont know the whole story. And that until I do, I WILL NOT stand for people to point fingers at him. For now, I'm standing back and trying to be patient. 18 What I can say is that Barb like Brandy have a right to have their own opinions and pages about Shemina Hirji and I can understand Barb's frustrations about what is being posted on her page that she created for Shemina. I have visited the site many times in the past few days and never have I seen anything remotely telling people what we can and cannot post. Barb only states this should be more just about Shemina and your experiences with this lady. I agree with her. And I understand Brandy's point of view as well coming from a violent homelife growing up as well. Still the more we fight amongst each other and call each other names the longer it will take to fix what is wrong in our society. How can we even begin to make changes as long as we lower ourselves to name calling and act as men think we should in a foolish way. So my advice, and it is only advice, to Barb continue on with your great page about this lady and let her friends post their memories of her and Brandy use your words and your conviction to help change the way the world views women and their rights but please stop bashing Barb. To me Paul has enough evidence stacked against him that he will most likely be found liable for her death and she will have justice when he goes to court and is found guilty for the crime he has committed. And from the stand point of which society or culture this happens in the most visibly you are wrong when you think it is just a minority problem or a class problem the many abusers come from all walks, creeds, religions, sex and races from around the world. No one community is guilty of domestic violence. So women and men of our world who want to make a difference stand up and let your voice be heard and help save the next Shemina Hirji from a short life.

Does it really matter what people do or don't think about you as long as you think you are a good person? Think about what you teach your kids. Opinions are like butts everyone has one. 22 My daughter does not lie and she has told me that the parents are mean yes you work but for me to take a day off to help at sports day is not easy I do not work as a legal asst but in business management and ecommerce I happen to be very important at work I also have a son with exspensive medical costs so thats a factor too and then all I get is insults because I do not see things the way people at the school do, after helping I will never help the school again because all I get is attitude and snooty looks. 24 For one.. I'm not a Legal assistant.. I'm a private investigator. And my job is not exactly safe and I work terrible hours and I may not run a whole department like you may, but at the same time I deal with working with people that I really would rather stay away from, but I'm not a bottom feeder. 25 If parents were mean to ur daughter why did u never take this up b4 y wait till now?????There were days when ur daughter was upset i asked her y cause she was having a tiff with a friend...Found her one day after school not sure what to do cause noone was there to get her,she was about to walk home by herself so instead i said u better go in and phone to make sure someone is home... 34 I would like to say Chelsea and Barb know the truth it was not either of them who set up the vigil it was myself and Kerry my sister n law Barb and Chelsea decided to take over when Kerry mentioned it...I know Chelsea and Barb need that notority to feel good about themselves so what ever I and Kerry decided to have the vigil in rememberance of Shemina and not for Thank you's and glory Why has no-one answerd why Paul was given the shrine content what about Shemin's family? Paul Cheema, the husband of murdered school principal Shemina Hirji, is not a suspect in the murder, insist police. He was attacked in the same home invasion that saw his wife murdered, but was not seriously harmed. Some suspect that there is something else going on here, and it has been revealed that Paul Cheema has a criminal past. Twelve years ago, he threatened his fiance with death and forcibly kidnapped her after the marriage was called off.

The description of one of the invaders wearing a business suit is not as far-fetched as some people might think.

While the investigation into the murder of newlywed Shemina Cheema (formerly Shemina Hirji) continues under utter secrecy in Burnaby, British Columbia, the question of the possible role the mixed marriage into which she entered is being asked. The fact is, though, that mixed marriages between Sikhs, Hindus, and Muslims is a particularly sore point for many in their respective communities, given the history of violence in India and Pakistan where these religions meet. It did not take me long to find a story of a violent reaction in a Western nation perpetrated by those who are bringing that violence from the old country. It happened in Birmingham, England, only three weeks ago, and thankfully only resulted in property damage.

But in a post in a Sikh forum, "dire consequences" were promised if mixed marriages were allowed to be conducted.
