The tape that wasn't there
The Chuck Cadman story takes another strange turn. The question of whether the Conservatives offered some sort of bribe to Chuck Cadman in 2005 to rejoin the Conservatives and bring down Paul Martin's government has already been put to rest with the RCMP reporting "no evidence" to support such an allegation.
But there is still the matter of the lawsuit filed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper against the Liberal Party for having published statements on the website to the effect that Stephen Harper knew of a bribe.
Part of the lawsuit hinged on a tape recording, a tape recording that the Conservatives now say has been doctored.

John Mark Karr is looking for a job that requires a criminal background check
John Mark Karr is famous for having masterfully played the American justice system. Picked up in Thailand on charges related to sex with children, Karr immediately confessed to some ill-defined connection to the murder of JonBenet Ramsey in Colorado. Karr, who fled the United States when he was picked up on child pornography charges in California, was deported by American authorities eager to close this high profile case.
This despite growing concerns that Karr was making the entire thing up, something I suggested the very day the story broke of John Mark Karr's arrest and confession.
As it turned out, Karr was making the entire thing up. Once he was safely out of Thailand, Karr could only laugh when the Ramsey charges were dropped when the evidence clearly showed Karr had nothing to do with the murder. As for the charges in California, those were dropped too, as it was revealed that in the years that had passed, the evidence was lost.
So John Mark Karr is a free man. And with no criminal convictions or outstanding charges, he can apply for any job he likes.

They can't send him to Thailand. One the Thais deported him without a hearing, that means they forgo the right to have him return. Two he could argue that Thai jails are cruel and unusual punishment and it is hard to imagine that a court in the US would disagree. This was a screw up from start to finish. Hopefully Steve's second prediction is the one that comes true.

Guess I should read the news more so in the first place as maybe this would be answered, but I don't do that - read/watch the views, err, news.
When I first heard about it here I thought "oh good, they caught JB's killer". Then after hearing his ex-wife say he was with her on Christmas, I'm thinking, "oh no, another Scott Peterson mess in the making".
I mean, don't authorities check these things out first?

John Mark Karr, Marc Dutroux, Karla Homolka
Three pedophiles who benefited from police incompetence. In the case of Belgium's Marc Dutroux, more children died before he was finally recaptured. In the case of Canada's Karla Homolka, she was given a light sentence as a result of an unnecessary plea bargain. In the case of America's John Mark Karr, he is likely to go free very soon, the charges against him dismissed.

Two things have always puzzled me about Karla's slap on the wrist. The first is the one Steve mentioned above: Marion Boyd's meddling that had so terrorized crown attorneys with her mantra that all men were bad and all women were good. Guess who gave Boyd the job and free rein to do her damage: Bob Rae, that's who.
Secondly, any criminal worth his or her salt knows that if you tell really big lies as part of a plea bargain, the deal is off. We were bombarded with the even bigger lie that if the crown reneged on the deal it could never get any future deals. Pure bullcrap as Glenn Beck would say. One bit of proof: when Law and Order did an episode on Karla they changed the ending so that she was given a much stiffer sentence. They couldn't believe that our crown attorneys could be so clueless and stupid.

C'mon Steve, did you actually think the police solved crimes through clever investigative procedures. That's only on CSI, Law and Order et al. Actual police work now is convincing people to rat out others through coercion, fear or reward. Officers go to public schools explaining to children what their parents and neighbours might be doing that the police would be interested in. When someone is charged with an offence, the loopholes, deals and protection afforded them usually results in minimal punishment at best.

It's not quite that bleak, Steve. There are procedures to maintain the chain of evidence, even when dealing with mere electrons. It is not as if the HD image was just sitting out there on a publicly shared drive that any old police officer could look through. There will be network and physical safeguards and so on to protect it from tampering.
Most businesses can manage to pull it off this sort of security without a giant hassle. Shouldn't be too hard for the police.
Posted by: Chris Taylor at September 21, 2006 03:38 PM (H0lcY)
3
Actually, it shouldn't be *that* much of a problem. As Chris points out, for EVERY piece of evidence in a criminal trial, the D.A. must establish a chain of evidence, that can only be done by testimony of the police officers who handled the evidence and had it stored (unless the defence consents to evidence being admitted, which in cases like this is rare).
For example, if the computer wasn't missing, and it was properly seized, secured, dated, initialled and stored for trial, the defence lawyer can still raise many of the questions you have: "this is the computer seized? my client said it is not. how do we know that this hard drive did not have kiddie porn placed on it by the officers, etc"
In both scenarios, the defence's theory is based on a conspiracy by police to fabricate/tamper with evidence. But there is no evidence of such a conspiracy. If the judge/jury believes the police officers and there is some evidence to corroborate that child porn had been seized or located on the computer hard drive, it shouldn't be terminal to the DA's case.
But what do I know? I'm not a judge, just a citizen with commonsense.
Posted by: JW at September 21, 2006 04:55 PM (uU0hH)

The other thing to keep in mind is that there's going to be more of an electronic trail there than just 5 bad images. Somehow the police got tipped to these images and it is unlikely that one of Karr's friends or neighbours saw these things on his screen from afar and decided to phone it in.
More than likely he downloaded it from somewhere, and more than likely that source got logged if not busted. The police will know both the source of the images and the receiver -- either of which will be Karr. Karr's own browser or e-mail history plus his ISP's logs will testify against him, proving that the computer in question did such and such activity on such and such a date, and guess whose internet account was using that IP at the time and date those pictures were transmitted?
So it's not as if the images are the only evidence. Some kind of activity tipped police to Karr's posession of those files, and that activity will have generated logs of its own, somewhere. And the smart policeman will have nabbed those too. So my guess is that Karr's going to the crossbar hotel even if his compter was lost.
I have had to provide testimony in these sorts of cases and it's rare for the evidence to get discounted. Electronic activity leaves a BIG evidence trail on multiple sources; clearing the paper trail is not as simple as wiping your browser cache and history.

I say he caught a well-deserved break. The only thing linking Karr to JonBenet was his admission of guilt, which was almost universally understood to be not on the level. They went through this huge expense and show to get him to Colorado to have the charges dismissed, and then "conveniently" extradited to California on porn charges. I suspect Thailand wouldn't even extradict him on those charges, but did on the murder. So this is looking like a classic bait and switch, and I had long figured that if the U.S. wanted Karr on a porno charge they should request permission from the Thai on that basis.
This looks like a well-deserved botch.

This all seems very odd when the Colorado case fell apart and it looked very much like this entire "Jon Benet" nonsense was just using Karr's obviously fake claims of guilt as an excuse to haul him over to the U.S. via California in order to get him in front of a judge on a misdemeanor porn charge.

John Mark Karr: Reaching for the consolation prize
John Mark Karr used a bogus confession to the murder of JonBenet Ramsey to escape from Thailand where he was caught getting a bit too close to little girls. American prosecutors flew him out of Thailand, and then within a week, watched the Ramsey case fall to pieces when the physical evidence proved he wasn't involved. Of course, they couldn't send him back to Thailand -- he's a US citizen, and Thailand isn't seeking extradition. So Karr is facing an old child pornography charge in California. It too will pass, and Karr will walk free -- no record, no parole, no restrictions on his movements.

Yet again the North American style justice/entertainment system fails.
If the physical DNA evidence was needed to definitively ID Karr as the perpretator, why didn't the prosecution ask for tissue/blood samples from the Thai authorities before having him sent back to the US? They would have been able to see that his background could make him a LIKELY suspect by running his name through the system, but the DNA evidence would have sealed the deal. Then they could have left him there to deal with the charges against him in Thailand knowing that justice would be served and he would no longer be a threat to anybody in the US.
But the North American justice/entertainment system isn't about protection of the citizens, it's about profile, sensationalism, and making a name for yourself.
Given the media attention this case has previously received, the "upholders of the law" saw an opportunity to increase thier profile by "seeing justice served". But you got to have they guy here to get that front page coverage! Karr knew exactly how to play this system and what weaknesses to exploit.
If our lawyers were as interested in justice as they are in making a name for themselves on a high profile case....we would have the effective justice system we need.
Like Thailand.

I've considered the possibility but I think he would be able make the plausible argument that as an American citizen on US soil, honouring an extradition request would result in him suffering cruel and unusual punishment. He would claim, and quite possible be granted, constitutional protection against extradition to Thailand.\
In any case, the Thai authorities allowed him to leave their jurisdiction. He might also make the case that they waived their right to try him by deporting him. Deportation was his ex-judicial punishment imposed by the Thai government, without even benefit of a trial.
Remember he wasn't extradited, he was deported. You can't deport someone you've arrested, then just ask for him to be sent back. You had him, you let him go, you blew your chance. Again, a valid argument, I think.

New information shows that Karr wanted a sex change which was cheaper in Thailand, but the situation with possible criminal changes appears to have swayed the Government towards a Deportation for whatever undisclosed reasons.
Media spin or misinformation can cause serious backlash, and one example in Canada was the "Racism" protests by the MCC's Tarek Fatah when 26 Illegals in Canada were rounded-up and then deportered .
The MCC and Fatah focused on the Sunni-Muslim males from Pakistan and portrayed it a random arrests with detentions and no Charges laid , but we now see that deporting those 18 Pakistani Illegals may have save us a U.K. style Terrorism attack by boarding planes in Canada as suicide-bombers on 747's like the Air-India slaughter .
But now we have a serious Militant eliment of Islam in Toronto which claims to stem from maltreatment towards Muslims, Mr.Fatah incited a disdain for canada which may have formented in the Brampton-17 which were home-grown terrorists lead by a adult Cleric preaching hate for a few years.
Karr may end up a scam artist with vivid dreams of a repeat of "Dog day afternoon" to pay for the sex change and get a plane to the USA while holding the media hostage .
Karr is play both Leon and Sonny .

"For the sake of Mary Lacy, the Boulder County District Attorney, John Mark Karr better be the man responsible, or else she might have just helped a potential sex offender escape from Thailand into the United States."
It seems to me that Karr belongs back in the U.S., as he's an American citizen. The poor Thai people hardly need another North American pedophile molesting their children.
But now that he's back in the U.S., prosecutors have to find a way to keep the guy off the streets and out of the schools. If he is guilty of the JonBenet murder, not a problem: He goes to jail.
But if he's not guilty of the Ramsey murder, then the prosecutors have got to find a way to keep the guy away from innocent children.

From everything I've read so far, it's obvious that your average (never mind sociopathic) human being, would confess to killing JFK to avoid even a short stint in a Thai prison.

1) Definite possibility, benefit to avoiding thai prisons and a free ticket home
2) IF he really does know hidden details the question is how?
i) Someone in the close circle spoke
ii) He is the killer
iii) He is connected to the killer....if he is a pedo then I am sure the killer has spoken within that sicko community

For the record he is being deported, not extridited by the US for alleged links to the Ramsey death.
Also, a Canadian that was used by the FBI as a knot expert revealed the gerrot used to choke Jon Benet was very intricate and unique , Karr only needs to be tossed a long piece of matching string and reproduce the knot used at the crime scene.
The Media frenzy is obsessed with DNA and finger prints to match the evidence collected at the home, but that might only proved Karr wasn't
alone and the other persons prints were found.
BTW, autopsy photos are at Ogrish.org and the claim of it being an accident reeks of one big lie.

I'd like to know the connection he had with the Ramsey family, if any. Not saying that they are to blame for his actions, of course they are not....but how does a sicko like him get access to a little girl who is brought up in a well-to-do family.
I wonder what other crimes he may have committed in the far east....a place where child prostitution is rampant. Interesting that he would choose Thailand.

Ummm....I hate to be a wet blanket because I thought this might be a well planned escape from after abusing young Thai children, but my question is this.
If he is found to be not guilty in the Ramsay murder, what is there to prevent him from being extradited right back to Thailand if they have some dirt on him there?

I can't get myself to look at the autopsy photos. It's enough to know what happened to this little girl: 6 going on 16. What was she doing in the basement of her house, when the family home was huge by the looks of it? Kids usually only sleep in the basement when there isn't a bedroom upstairs...
How much is it going to cost the U.S. to deal with this guy's claims? It's quite clear from the photos of Karr and the news footage that he's a sicko, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if we learn that he's been sexually abusing his female students in Thailand.
What was he fired for? How did he move from job to job in the U.S.? It seems it's been too easy for him to get around. Whatever his connection with the JonBenet Ramsey tragedy, I think this guy should be locked up. I'm sure law enforcement can find something to stick to him, in order to stop him from preying on innocent children.

Was this guy even in the state at the time of the killing, I may have missed it but nothing I have heard puts him in the location?

ian: Some account said at one point that he'd lived down the street from the Ramsey's but I can't confirm that. His ex-wife says she's sure he was at home with her and the kids the Christmas that JonBenet Ramsey was killed.

SO now Mr. Karr's family hires a media publisist to handle any media deals? WTF?? Looks like the only way his family will stand by him is if they cam make a buck. Don Henley was right.. "give us dirty laundry"
I hope they make lots of deals and then he turns out to be some whack-job looking for attention that his mommy didnt give him.

John Mark Karr's pre-planned escape from Thailand
Is John Mark Karr's confession to the murder of JonBenet Ramsey just a carefully prepared means of escaping Thai justice?

yep you're on track. I saw this as fishy right from the get go.The pictures of him obviously OTL , and his ex-wife saying he was with him. Makes total sense... today, I'm looking forward to further developments.

I thought he looked very weak and thin as if he picked up aids from his lifestyle in Thailand , with a time bomb that could kill him in the near future what better way to go out as a piece of the JonBenet puzzle and more conspiracy theories to link him to Elvis,Bigfoot,Roswell,9/11 ,Jimmy Hoffa, area 51 , JFK , Castro and even a weather machine that made it snow to cover his tracks.
The yahoo wants fame and free-heath care while in custody , but soon the Canadian expert on knots will want him to make the same complex knot used on JonBenet.
Forget all the publically released news and evidence, just make the knot and then hang the bastard.

This thought occured to me as well.
Would the US government send him back to Tailand if it turned out he is lying?

He would argue that sending him to Thailand would constitute cruel and unusual punishment. He would probably win that argument, too.

Lets hope and pray he has to deal with the crimes he commited in Thailand first.

He was already running from a 5 year old child porn charge in Petaluma, Cal. If the JonBenet bid goes belly up the US will keep him for the California charge.
Polly Klass's father said something very interesting about this icky creep: I don't think he is guilty, and if he is not that points the finger of suspicion right back where it has been for the last 10 years.

Jonbenet case was long solved . the brother caused this with rage and jealousy and Karr was involved by the son Burke. To protect the son Burke the Ramsey's denied everything. Eventually Karr's conscience was telling him to contact the mother who was dying of cancer.
He is not the killer, but some one who assisted in the whole deal
