Liberal Party National Director Greg Fergus sends his first email, minus any references to Stephane Dion

The National Director of the Liberal Party, Greg Fergus, has sent his first email since taking over the job from Jamie Carroll. The letter is interesting for more about what it doesn't say. Not a word about Stephane Dion anywhere in an email whose purpose seems to be to inspire Liberals.

Isn't Stephane Dion inspiring?

Worse yet, Greg Fergus makes pains to remind the reader that the Liberal Party is about more than any one man. Curious.

Jean Chretien, public revelations, and stupid f*cking idiots!

Jean Chretien's memoirs are coming out, and boy, don't they just play into the whole "don't air Liberal Party problems in public" issue in a big way?

Stephane Dion is not going to be served well by the assertion by Jean Chretien that Canada was on track to meet Kyoto commitments until Paul Martin took over as prime minister in December 2003. Paul Martin quickly put Stephane Dion into his cabinet as environment minister in July 2004. Dion served in that role until the fall of Paul Martin's government nearly two years later in February 2006.

Sure sounds to me that Jean Chretien's published memoirs are going to put the blame for Canada's poor environmental performance right on Stephane Dion's shoulders.

And we already know that people who go public with problems inside the Liberal Party are "stupid f*cking idiots".

Well, he's actually putting the blame all on Martin since he was in charge. However, it does encourage questions as to what exactly Dion did as environment minister to get Canada 'off-track' of our Kyoto commitments. It definitely would be an uncomfortable question for Dion to be asked since he essentially has to dump on Chretien by saying that Kyoto goals would have been met if his plan was implemented. Otherwise, his green credentials take another serious blow.

3 This was my favourite part of the article: "Knowing Auditor general Sheila Fraser's report was going to be "tough," Chretien was prepared to receive it, thank her for her work and then say if there was evidence of theft or fraud that the police should catch the crooks and the courts should put them in jail. "Of course, I expected to have to take some hits in the press for a couple of weeks, but that hadn't frightened me in the past and it didn't frighten me now. By the time Martin was to take over, the whole issue would have been history and he could have begun his mandate without that albatross around his neck." Jean Chretien, his cabinet and government would have been perfectly happy sweeping the Sponsorship scandal under the carpet. It would have cost the a "some hits" in the media - but you know, that's the price of power in the Liberal world.

4 Chretien released his book now, knowing that Dion is on the way out and anything he says about Martin that might reflect on Dion is irrelevant. Ignatieff screwed Dion's environmental record with his: "We didn't get it done .. WE DIDN'T GET IT DONE !!". Then Dryden followed that up with his: "Why couldn't we do better?" These rhetorical accusations would be again used in TV ads to torpedo Dion .. but since Dion will not run in any next election, Chretien probably felt free to slag Martin and indirectly Dion. Liberal blood will now flow copiously as old scores are settled .. and we wait for more Iggy supporters to inflict their wounds on Dion's quivering carcass. Best show in town on October 16 - 18 ..LOL

6 - To any Canadian with a memory, this actually casts Dion and Martin in a GOOD light - after all, who ever believed a single word out of J.C. Superstar's mouth? What a nasty old man! Still brooding about being shown the door, still heaping polemic and invective on the head of anybody who peeved him, in total disregard of anything but his own miserable ego. I recall his comment after the Maritimes voted solidly Conservative in his first election; "Well! They should have known what to expect when they chose not to vote Liberal! I hope they don't expect to get any government money this term!" After all, our tax dollars were HIS to spend as he wished, so I suppose that was fair - and in point of all-too-uncomfortable fact, as the western Provinces received less federal money than his own home riding throughout his tenure, NOBODY needed expect any federal money from him. And I don't really blame Allan Rock for his grand multi-billion-dollar gun-control fiasco. J.C. announced at a Liberal conference before he even became Prime Minister, that there would be "tough new gun laws" - Allan was just following orders. It's all old news, Jean, as are your biased, poisonously self-serving reminiscences. As for that matter, are you - go away and quit bugging us.

8 I don't think Mulroney was classless for criticizing Trudeau. He was classless for saying that Trudeau did not have the "moral fiber" to be Prime Minister, because he chose not to fight the second world war. But, that is memoirs are all about. You say things that you would not have said as Prime Minister, but you thought about it. I haven't bought Mulroney's book and won't, because it's too long with 1200 pages. I understand Chretien's book is just under 500 pages, so I think I am going to buy it.

On CTV tonight, Craig Oliver said that Chretien mostly only vilified Martin, and was more gracious towards pretty much everyone else, including, surprisingly, Brian Mulroney.

13 Hate to say it, well, maybe not, but JC is a f*cking storyteller of the fictitious variety. They/he had no flipping plan to implement Kyoto, it was impossible. Beyond paying carbon credits to big polluters like China he didn't have a plan in place. If he did he left it for someone else to take the heat knowing what it would do to the economy of this country. Maybe even that is giving him too much credit. The already disintegrating Librano Party will get it's mercy killing with this get even book of JC memoirs. The Great I AM could be another option for a title, or Wasn't I the Greatest. Martin was not a great team player for sure and not as clever as JC in the political arena. It's not too smart to divide a Party into camps for over a decade and expect to run the affairs of the country with a fractured party of warring factions.

16 WMLR: Right, I was trying to be slightly kind. There'll still be a Powercorp pimp(s) in the Liberal ranks to some extent, we have Rae and his brother John, they'll be well represented. This is more of a tell tale book on the character of Monsieur Chretien. It may bite his own butt as much as Martins. They deserve each other,they were a destructive team, each used the other. They're both losers.

17 Now, this is interesting. One has to ask the question: "Why is he doing this now?" I guess some could argue that Jean Creetin wants to take some more revenge on certain members of his party for some perceived slight (ie. Paul Martin and his backers). Could Jean be trying to deliberately stab his old party in the back and help the Tories get a majority; hoping that it will cause the Liberanos to ''rebuild'' themselves? I also wonder, could there be any grounds for any of the parties mentioned in the book to launch a civil action against Jean or the publisher? Any thoughts?

This from someone whose friends and supporters were constantly undermining John Turner (particularly during the early stages of the 1988 campaign - there was talk of Turner being dumped in mid-campaign) while he (Chretien) did absolutely nothing to discourage them.

22 Looks like the Little Shyster from Shawinigan is suffering from wanting to rewrite his legacy to make him look good by making others look bad. With his lying about being on target with Kyoto, what others lies are there in that book. I have enough wood to last this winter so I'll wait for when his book is on sale then buy it at 25 cents and use it for the fireplace. It will be of better use to me then.

It's just laugable that Cretch would blame Dithers for the Afghan assignment and Kyoto, issues about which he has as much, if not more responsibility than Dithers. Some of this says more about Cretch than Dithers: that he would (apparently) believe so strongly that Canada should take the softest possible assignment and leave all the heavy lifting to our American and British allies. How very Euro-sophisticated of him! Remember how offended he was when George W failed to mention Canada among the nations that he thanked for their assistance. Did he never wonder why? (Of course his buddy, Slick Willy, soft on terrorism but hard for just about everything else would have thanked him profusely and sent him a gross of monogrammed golf balls for his briefcase.) There are surely enough other matters over which to hold Dithers accountable: his ten plus years of disloyalty to "da boss", his tolerance of corruption; his mindless anti-Americanism, his kowtowing to the unelected judiciary, his decision against BMC; his desecration of the institution of marriage, all the while proclaiming his devoutedness as a Catholic; and all the myriad other ditherings that he did. I won't be reading Cretch's latest book; I'm waiting for Chuck Guite's.

Jamie Carroll story winds to a close, and we tally up the score

When Jamie Carroll allegedly told Quebec Liberals that if followed their advice to hire more Quebecers, he would have to hire more Chinese too, Quebec Liberals went ballistic.

A crisis quickly erupted as Quebec Liberals, none of them fans of Liberal Party leader Stephane Dion, went to the press to tell any reporter who would listen just how awful Stephane Dion's handpicked team leading the Liberal Party really was.

At first Stephane Dion said that Jamie Carroll was misinterpreted, and that no action was required.

Then Stephane Dion fell silent, and the Liberal Party made it known that Jamie Carroll would be shuffled out of his position as National Director and into another role.

Then Liberal Party fell silent, and a leak revealed that Jamie Carroll was threatening to sue the Liberal Party for defamation unless he was generously compensated.

Finally, over a week after the alleged comments that kick off this whole episode, Jamie Carroll is gone. Apparently action was required, and there was no role for Jamie Carroll in the Liberal Party after all. As for compensation and lawsuits, no word on those subjects. Presumably no lawsuit, but money remains a "confidential personnel matter".

However, I believe most of the Quebec Liberals were Ignatieff supporters and Ignatieff appears to be losing influence in the Party. That other Quebec arm of the Party is in charge now and Bob Rae is the leader-in-waiting. As for Outrement, I think Dion himself did all the damage there by his apparent lack of communication with the grassroots, leaving them waiting for a candidate until they fell far behind the NDP while star candidates who offered to run were rejected. Then they were saddled with Dion's choice who obviously wasn't popular. It was the incompetence of Dion and his close advisors that were responsible for Outrement. They can't get rid of Dion but the advisors are expendable.

Has Ignatieff lost influence in the Liberal party now? He had ~30% grassroots support going into the leadership convention as the frontrunner, while Rae had ~20% grassroots support. I see Rae as the left-wing solution to Liberal losses to the NDP when soft lefty Liberals fled to the NDP in the last two elections. If the Liberals can reclaim those votes they could conceivably win the next election. Now that Powercorp is apparently backing Rae, that may be too tempting for Liberals to reject, because it means money and privilege courtesy of Powercorp. Canadian politics is becoming quite Byzantine now.

I think we should hold a referandum in the rest of Canada on whether to seperate from Quebec. Think how more advanced Canada would have been if Trudeau had not been a coward and served his country and maybe not returned like a lot of Canadian young men.

You know the Liberals have got problems when Denis Coderre is their top news story three days running

I know it was the long Thanksgiving weekend in Canada, but when you look at the news, Stephane Dion has been utterly out of sight. The leader of the Liberal Party has not been heard of or seen since last...what...September 29? That was the Friday appearance in Halifax when Dion state unequivocably that Liberal Party National Director Jamie Carroll was not guilty of a firing offense for what he allegedly told Quebec Liberals when advised to hire more Quebecers.

Since then, Jamie Carroll has been under a political deathwatch, Stephane Dion has not been seen (as far as I know), and Denis Coderre's laughable trip to Afghanistan is just about the only news coming out of the Liberal Party.

His appearance at a press conflab today was to stifle rumors of the Liberal divide. They're one happy family of course. He's heading West to again meet and greet. Jason Cherniak vs The Mission

Jason Cherniak, Liberal blogger and defender/apologist for Liberal Party leader Stephane Dion, has had enough. He has gone on the attack, trying to remind the "stupid f*cking idiots" who are attacking Stephane Dion that they are hurting the Liberal Party in the process.

That argument won't work. These people don't care. Found at all levels in the Liberal Party, this secret cadre is on a mission. A mission to remove Stephane Dion and anyone who worked for him from the Liberal Party. If the Liberal Party is wrecked along the way, so be it.

1 Mr Cherniak has hitched his horse to a wagon that he was sure would pull him over "Senate-Seat Mountain". The horses up front have cut the wagon loose and it's careening out of control. Now he's afraid he'll end up a crumpled heap but he can't quite bring himself to cut the reins in case the wagon miraculously becomes a train and turns to chug over the mountain under it's own steam. The truth is that wagons don't become trains. You're a wagon or a train. Those horses might get over the mountain one day but they knew they wouldn't make it pulling a crappy wagon so they sacrificed it for the sake of survival. Meanwhile, as the wagon hurtles down the wrong side of the mountain, Jason just picks up speed to stay with it, all the while chanting, "Be a train! Be a train!" Choo-choo, Jason. Seeya

7 I'm not beating on Jason. But I do think he has grossly misread the threat to Stephane Dion and the lengths to which these people will go. It's as if he's suffering from a massive case of cognitive dissonance, unable to process the information that suggests that Stephane Dion is mortally wounded. Hey, I might be wrong, and this might just be a handful of idiots, but I don't think so. There also could be some confusion with the Ontario election going on and so many idiots all stuck up on the Faith based schools issue. Not that we don't already have faith based schools, we fund the Roman Catholic schools to parallel the so-called Public system. 11 I was just reading your post regarding the NDP. Good post... I happen to think personally that the NDP has a real shot right now at pulling off a bit of a coup on the Liberals. I'm not certain I agree with all your points, there is a reality that politicians of all stripes, by the very nature of their profession, are in a constant struggle for power, regardless of where their seat is in the commons. That said, Layton has been playing the game well of late, and has swept the rug out from under the feet of the Libs in Montreal. Their confusion has left the door open for him to cause some serious damage. "As Quebec goes, so goes Ontario". The issues facing the Liberals are even more significant than they themselves realize. When the Liberal Party ruled over a nation of 5 million, 8 million, 24 million... they could still reach a substantial amount of individuals with their platforms, focusing on TO and Montreal. The really amusing thing to me is the ever passionate quest to fill the voting booths full of new immigrants, and in having successfully done so, they have in fact begun the process of their own "demise". By opening the floodgates in the late 80's under the Tories, and then seizing that initiative by opening them even wider to immigration, they've gone and diluted their own base. They simply no longer represent a majority of the people. In fact, 2000 was the last time a Liberal leader won with more than 40% of the vote at 40.8 percent... of a turn out of 61.2% of the eligable voters, meaning less than 27% of the nation actually voted for the Liberals. Indeed, no party since Wildman Brian has won a true majority. In all of the Liberal wins since 93, they've never captured more than 27% of the actual voting nation. It was purely the self imolation of the PC's that even allowed the Liberals successive back to back majorities. It certainly wasn't the will of the "other" 70% or so voters. Harper may be very right that we are on track for a succession of minority governments, simply because, as you say, the Liberals muddle the middle. Should the Liberals fail to achieve a modicum of harmony in the near future, they may find themselves in an ideological wasteland, thanks to some asute moves by Layton, and little error by Harper. The world is confusing, and people look for definitive concepts of leadership when they are scared or confused, or feel adrift. It's simply not substansive enough to say "We represent the will of Canada", without actually representing the will of the majority of Canadians. It will be a couple of decades yet before the NDP are ready to rule... there's still to much to achieve yet for Canada, to risk letting the NDP at the helm. 20 to 30 years from now, when the nation is moving along and the NDP can't really fuck it up, thats when we will be able to afford their idealism. In the meantime, they present a credible, and very exact point of view... one I think many on the left, disillusioned or disenfranchised as a result of the failures the Liberals, may very well embrace. One thing Liberals should take strong note of is that there is virtually no fluidity in the polling numbers of the CPC... while I believe that the numbers are not as firm for the Liberals. Even in the poll out today, Decima... arguably one of the worst polling firms, was quick to point out that the polling numbers might be twisted as much of the Quebec polling came from Montreal. Regardless, I think as long as Layton doesn't say something like "Free Welfare for everyone", and Dion continues to fail to get the parties shit together, the Liberals will be hard put to unit the left. Their credibility is to shot for it to mean much to the true environmentalists, anti-war, womens rights groups and on and on in the left side of the spectrum. Meanwhile, all the PM has to do is steer the ship, make some sensible legislation, and not let his people get into shit, and boom, he'll get his majority for exactly the same reasons Chretien did... We are beginning the process of maturing as a state, through ideological polarization, and no cheque book is big enough to buy that. Regardless of who is writing the cheque. Interesting times indeed.

3 This is funny. I spoke to Ms Jennings on the Tommy Schnurmacher show a few weeks beack, after the election.I asked her about the iggy plot, which had been reported in the papers and the blog. She said she knew nothing of this. She seemed quite shocked that U was saying such things. The next caller said that they had read about the iggy plot in the Gazette. 4 I suspect there is a coup being orchestrated by within the Liberal party. All signs will point to it coming from the Ignatieff camp, but in reality it will be the subtle machinations of the Rae camp. Look how Power Corp Rae will now be involved in the top end of party planning now. "Clearly" it's Bob Rae trying to support the leader Dion from attacks by the "evil" Ignatieff. So what if the protestations of the Iggy camp that deny the allegations happen to be true, they must be lying. Expect Iggy and his supporters to start to fracture over this as the rest of the party falls in behind Dion and Rae. Dion of course will still lose the next election which will leave the leadership open to Rae to sweep in as the loyal "saviour". Machiavellian. It'll be interesting to watch. Of course I may be attributing cunning and intelligence to certain Liberals where there may actually be none. So these predictions could be (and likely are) way off base. Only time will tell.

If we're looking for suspects, my conspiracy theory is Denis Coderre, who has conveniently announced he'll be out of the country, trying to get to Afghanistan on a "fact-finding mission" all by himself, "by hook or by crook," because the government doesn't want to help him get there. Jason Cherniak had a scoop this afternoon. Jamie Carroll would not only be staying in the Liberal Party, he would be keeping his job as National Director. Of course we know that not only was Jamie Carroll chucked out by the Management Committee, Jamie Carroll is reported to be threatening to sue the Liberal Party for defamation unless he's paid 18 months salary.

9 Rare for Chretien to be sick, sick. Don't recall him ever missing ANYTHING due to illness. Could be old age is creeping up and his feet are getting cold due to poor circulation caused by stress. Wouldn't anyone in the Liberal hierarchy be stressed right now? Quebec is where it's at for Liberals, always their turf, now the conservatives and NDP are stealing their thunder. Somehow I suspect Liberal MPs and candidates will not want to enter an election with Dion as their leader and spokesperson. If it's conceded that Liberals will lose the next election with Dion as their leader (just to give him the honour of an election), why bother having him as leader in the first place? Will Liberals demand that Dion step down since it's acknowledged he will lead Liberals to a stunning loss in any next election, and instead find another leader to lose with and thus establish that new leader before the Canadian people? 5 I don't know how Harper can possibly resist poisoning the throne speech and precipitating an election now. The Liberal party is in a critically weak position and things only seem to be getting worse for them. Imagine if Harper writes a throne speech which explicitly throws away kyoto and commits Canada to five more year in Afghanistan. I just don't think it's possible for the Liberals to abstain from voting on such a motion... we'd be into an election, and Harper would get his majority.

CBC News is reporting that Jamie Carroll is going to resign today. Stephane Dion's leadership of the Liberal Party suffers another blow. Meanwhile the leak is not clear whether Dion demanded Carroll's resignation. Typical, when you think about it. 1 Watch the Liberal spin - was Carroll pushed out, or did he go on his own? You know, Dion could have shown SOME leadership quality by swiftly getting rid of Carroll. Now Carroll is gone anyway, and as a result, Dion looks way wrong for adamantly refusing to let him go. How much weaker are the Liberals going to let Dion get? 4 Leave it to Jane Taber and the Globe to publish a story like this. The Quebec LPC is threatening to lock it's doors and turn out the lights for lack of funds. "Star" Quebec Liberals are abandoning the party. Stephane Dion's close advisor and National Director is being asked to step down for controversial remarks he recently made. Fundraising from LPC grassroots is barely sputtering along at best. Many LPC candidates have yet to be chosen/appointed. And Jane Taber is writing as if nothing is wrong with the LPC and they are firmly getting their election footing. Uh-huh. Righty right. All these things are enough to give a Party pause before going into a General Election, but...there's still the leader Stephane Dion and the idea of him leading the LPC to contend with. Stephane Dion himself is badly hurting the Liberal brand in Quebec - Trudeau owned the province, now the Libs barely have a dozen of the 75 seats there with no viable hope of gaining many more. He doesn't resonant well in any part of Canada. He is not well-liked within his own party. He can't attract the fundraising that is badly needed. The policies he does maintain firmly are either impractical or unworkable. The biggest current beef he has with the Conservative government is on Afghanistan. Fine enough, but Dion hasn't even been to there to see firsthand what is going on on the ground there. If anything, this does make life interesting from a political point of view, but Taber should give her head a shake and acknowledge what is really happening, not what she is told or thinks is happening.

6 Perhaps the most telling aspect of this is how eager Dion is to believe what some Liberals are feeding him. Then again, it's nothing new. So much of Dion's perception of himself has been the result one steady stream of platitudes from federalist pundits and environmentalist lobby groups. 2 Dion needs to take some serious action to stem the bleeding. Take one of the renegade MP's, either Coderre, or Rodriguez, and then nominate someone else for their riding. Voila - you are no longer running for the Liberals. I am not sure if he is able to do that to a sitting MP, but whatever he does, the message needs to be powerful. His detractors keep raising the stakes because there are no apparent consequences for attacking the leader. I think the Liberals have still not fully atoned for Adscam, thus I am hardly sympathetic. Still, this is getting painful to watch.

6 The infighting in the Quebec wing of the Liberal Party has to be the most entertaining soap opera of all time. It blows away the infighting of the old days of the PC Party. Even the late Dalton Camp could not have thought of this type of infighting to get rid of a leader! If Dion wants to have a chance of saving his feeble leadership he needs to find some stones and trim the fat in the Quebec office of the party. Those plotting against him should be fired and the MPs and Senators calling him out should be suspended from caucus or at the very least removed from their critic portfolios and replaced with MP's loyal to Dion (if there are still any). He has to do this publicly and quickly or he can kiss whatever control of the party he has left goodbye, as well as any hope of not being labeled a weak leader by his opponents. Oh wait, that is already his image. I am curious to know how the Liberal Party in the rest of Canada feels about this brewing Civil War. It can not do much to encourage them to want to fight a potential election after the Harper Government's upcoming Throne Speech that will now likely include some form of real tax break for Canadians.

I personally believe there are those in LPCQ who are trying to shift blame for themselves for what happened in the by-election. Taking Carroll's commnet out of context provided them a perfect scapegoat. My rule of thumb - never trust people connected to Jean Lapierre. What is so sad is the only thing hurt by this crap is the Liberal Party. Janke should be happy. There are so many more important story's out here: Monte Solberg admitting the Tories can't deliver the promised Day Care spaces and blaming the provinces even though the provinces agreed to the previous governments plan; Stockwell Day's plan to arm border guards is going to cost a billion dollars according to Greg Weston even though there hasn't been an incident at a border crossing where a guard has needed a gun for decades; Tom Flanagan admitting that a Tory majoriy will get rid of supply management (lets see Harper talk about this in rural Quebec); The Tory plan to funnell advertising through candidates to bypass Elections Canada laws which allowed them to overspend in the last campaign by $1million; Stockwell Day and Stephen Harper never accounting for their desire for Canada to be part of the Iraq war; The complete disrespect for Climate Change science from the Tory government and Harper's siding with the world's biggest polluters against the UN; The list goes on and this list affects my daily life. Instead everyone is wrapped up in a story that if anyone actually looked at Stephane Dion's record they would see francophone communities outside Quebec call the commitment of the federal government to bilingualism, 'The Dion Plan'. It's time to debate issues and put the personal shit behind us. Janke is a great defender of Tory policy and I respect him for that but lets leave the personal bullshit for Frank Magazine.

The story was run because the reporter got a phone call from a "Potential Liberal Candidate in Quebec", not Janke. The root of the story resulted from 4 people who attended the meeting calling the press, not Janke. It is newsworthy because the press loves to see blood being spilled in a political party. When the MSM was raking the Conservatives over the coals a few years back you would not have been complaining. The other things you talk about are also being reported, but have no legs because your party's infighting is far more interesting to the general public and most certainly to Bloggers.

22 Okay okay guys, everyone calm down. As Steve said, calmdown should be respected because he came here and made his point without ad hominen attacks or otherwise insulting anyone. That being said, I disagree on the border issue. Having lived in a major border town for several years there wasn't a month that went by when we weren't reminded in terrible ways the dangers of lax border enforcement. Knowing several border guards as I do, (both professional and the students that they hire) the issue of arming the guards is incredibly common-sense. Guards currently do not 'need' guns because their rule of thumb is 'if you think the traveler is packing, let them through'. Most security at the border is ridiculous anyways, I've crossed without even been required to show ID! While arming the guards may not solve all these problems it is a necessary first step in order to empower security at the border to be able to defend themselves if necessary and be willing to enforce the laws without fear of finding themselves outgunned. At the very least, it removes this excuse for their inaction.

An official call has been made by Robert Fragasso, the president of the Liberal Party in Quebec, that Jamie Carroll resign as national director of the Liberal Party. Carroll is Liberal Party leader Stephane Dion's longtime ally and an important party of Dion's inner circle. He continually falls for it over and over. Hey its even getting to the right time of the year for it, I remember it used to be around Thanksgiving. 10 years of Dion as an MP in the party, 1 year as a leadership candidate and almost a year as the leader, yet somehow he will magically morph into the savior of the Liberal party. Overnight this caterpillar will emerge from his 12 year cocoon and kick the stuffing out of Harper.

7 Looks like the Quebec Liberals haven't "underestimated" Dion ... they know exactly what a loser he is and no longer want to support Dion's leadersnip. Won't it be a tad incongruous having Ignatieff sitting next to Dion on the front benches of the HoCs when Parliament resumes .. particularly in Question Period when Dion has to stand up and make his usual incomprehensible and idiotic harangue..?? Somehow I suspect that Iggy is planning for an empty seat where Dion sat .. by October 16th or else the Liberal party may well split, leaving Dion without a party to lead.

Liberal blogger demands Stephane Dion denounce Jamie Carroll's Chinese crack

We hear from Liberal sources that at a meeting with Quebec Liberals in the aftermath of the Outremount by-election loss, Jamie Carroll responded to demands that more Quebecers be included in Stephane Dion's inner circle. Jamie Carroll is the Liberal Party's National Director and a close supporter and advisor of Liberal Stephane Dion.

Jamie Carroll's response: If I hire more Quebecers, will I also have to hire more Chinese?

A Liberal blogger has had enough and wants Stephane Dion to slap Jamie Carroll down.

Meanwhile I am amazed at just how eager Quebec Liberals are to make sure that any misstep by Stephane Dion or his inner circle is made known to the press.

Update #1: The president of the Quebec wing of the Liberal Party of Canada, Robert Fragasso, is demanding that Jamie Carroll remove himself as national director.

2 I think I know what this is all about. I suspect that Mr. Carroll was complaining about the Quebec Liberals wanting positions in the party HQ -- solely because they were from Quebec. The analogy that he used could certainly be considered culturally insensitive, but the point he was trying to make would still be valid: that Quebec Liberals shouldn't assume they're entitled to positions of authority just because they're from Quebec. To hire a Chinese Canadian, on the basis of race, would make just as much sense. As a Canadian-born Chinese, I can say I wasn't particularly offended by Mr. Carroll's remarks as reported. But then againk I'm a Tory.

12 It is fairly obvious that the Liberal Party of Canada does not do well in Opposition. With no tax payers to fleece, no patronage appointments to hand out, no cabinet positions to assign, etc., there is no way to keep the troops in line and no way to punish those who misbehave. As we all know, most Liberals don't donate to their party and not many seem to volunteer so they will be hard pressed to fund the necessary paid workers needed to run any future election. If their vote totals in the next election are anything like their Quebec byelection results the party will soon be bankrupt and we will face the possibility of the NDP as official opposition and a potential future Government. Lets hope the Liberals learn to function in opposition before an NDP official opposition become a reality.

Liberal Party in Quebec in rebellion?

Apparently the Liberal Party in Quebec will shut down tomorrow unless Liberal Party headquarters in Ottawa sends them $250,000 immediately.

I don't know what is more remarkable. That the Liberal Party in Quebec is shaking down HQ for money, or that we're hearing about it.

But to me, it comes near to confirming a pattern suggesting that the Quebec wing of the Liberal Party is in full rebellion.

Asking after the source of the funds -- Stephen Harper vs Jamie Carroll

The Liberals are trying to find fault with Stephen Harper's fundraising activities from five years ago, when it is clear that by the law of the time, nothing wrong actually happened. If they want to play that game, maybe we should be asking where Jamie Carroll got his hands on $30,000, since unlike the case of Stephen Harper, the answer to that question does indeed matter when it comes to the legality of the donations.

4 Excellent question! Unless your parents were very rich, almost NO 27 year old is likely to have $30,000 to kick around to loan a leadership contestant. Heck, Cherniak with a law degree had to BEG to raise the funds just to attend the convention. When I was 27, I had $30,000 saved, but it was going towards a downpayment on a condo, not a low interest loan to a political leader. A 27 year old is only a few years out of university for a 4 or 5 year degree, and just graduating law or medicine. I'm sorry, but 99% of the population can't scratch up that kind of cash at 27 unless it's been gifted to them. At 27, you can get $30,000 credit if you have a professional degree, but you probably also have $15,000+ in student loans. And what 27 year old would extend their credit to loan money to a fourth place Liberal party leadership candidate? I was a casual observer to this issue until you brought up the issue of his age. I think this stinks to high heaven.

8 Why the Liberals are playing stupid, petty games when they have such serious problems within their own party is telling. Looks like they're desperately trying to find something to take on the BBQ circuit this summer and coming up empty and looking damned foolish. Harper obeyed the rules as they applied five years ago, it's a non issue. I'm sick of all these pollster busy bodies polling on petty little inconsequential things, best to ignore them. Have they polled on how many people use one sheet of toidy paper per go as suggested by Sheryl Crowe? No doubt it'll happen soon. Dion will be salivating after that 30K!

10 Everybody in the Liberal party knows that Dion will not survive as leader much longer, because the Liberals are not rising in the polls and Dion is not building up the necessary leadership charisma to carry the Liberals to a victory in any next election. The longer they hold on to Dion the worse it will get because their strategy is negative and trying to drag Harper down to Dion's level. Meanwhile Ignatieff is putting in his time as "deputy" leader and letting Dion lead the charge against Harper. All the Liberals know that they cannot sell Canadians that Dion should be their next prime minister so Dion is just being used to trash Harper and then Ignatieff will majestically rise to be their new leader and sweep the country. Dion is despised in his home province of Quebec and with a couple more stagant cross-Canada polling results, Dion will be asked/pushed/shoved to abdicate.

13 Sorry, but there is a big difference between a young guy driving a fancy car he has leased or financed in some other fashion vs. a young guy having $30,000 after tax dollars available to loan. As a young guy who makes good money, I am curious about this. Every young guy I know who has $30,000 kicking around did it by being smart with their finances and making smart investments. Not by risking it on low interest loans (6%) to political candidates. I had to prove that the money for the down payment on my house really belonged to me. People making $30,000 loans to candidates should need to do the same thing, to ensure that it is not juast a shell game.

I'm just saying that past Liberal fundraising practices have created an atmosphere where those sorts of assumptions are reasonable. I mean geez, you've got sponsorship, children donating, dead supporters. Taxpayers are skeptical. I support the movement to limit loans so that this sort of "shady looking" deal doesn't take place. If it was a legal loan, fine. But it looks awful and raises questions. I want the same rules in place for everyone. Harper was following the law at the time. It's a little ridiculous to ask him to go comply with regulations that were not in place when the donations were made. I don't even believe that Harper has the right to disclose those donors. Some people may have decided not to give to his campaign, or give a different amount had disclosure been required. Asking those people to give up their right to privacy after the fact is a red herring. They have a right to privacy.

21 We need to get a little perspective on this issue of loaning money as in the Liberal case put forth above. If I'm a graduate student loaning money to my prof. then would that compromise his evaluation of me towards my degree? If I was a career criminal and loaned money to the judge or prosecuting attorney...then when up before their bench on a charge,will the public get a fair trial or will it be a sham? If I was a drug dealer and knew and loaned money to a customs agent ,would he turn his head and look the other way as I drove thru with a trunkful of dope? The answer in each case could be no but then again it could be a big YES. The problem of course is at the very least the optics and at most collusion. The problem of course is credibility and as Dion has aptly demonstrated once again,he suffers from Poor Judgement (Central Nova riding being another that comes immediately to mind)..and due to his lack of good judgement his credibility is in question and hence he can't be trusted as a leader. Politics is a team sport and time and again Dion just doesn't get it as is shown by his handling of the Jamie Carroll issue in that he didn't back his deputy PM when it was indeed called for. These sort of actions send a very strong message to the LPC that their leader is without doubt a confused and politically naive choice to head a once national party. Of course more disturbing is that pretty much most of the engaged electorate know it too.

Jamie Carroll, a 28-year-old who served as deputy campaign director of Stephane DionÂ’s successful campaign for the leadership of the Liberals, will start immediately, the party said in a news release on Thursday. Mr. Carroll will also serve as the partyÂ’s deputy campaign director, the release said. After Mr. DionÂ’s leadership victory, Mr. Carroll served first as his acting chief of staff, then deputy chief of staff. Mr. Carroll grew up in Truro and in Guysborough County, and attended the University of KingÂ’s College. He started in politics in the 1993 election, pounding signs and knocking on doors for the Liberals. He went to Ottawa to work for Halifax West MP Geoff Regan, was a special assistant to Paul Martin, then served as director of parliamentary affairs for Mr. Dion, who was environment minister at the time. In the news release, Mr. Dion describes Mr. Carroll as "a trusted adviser (who) will provide strong leadership for our staff and volunteers as we head toward the next election." Note: Jamie Carroll graduated from King's in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts" So let me get this right. This guy, who finished a BA in 2000 and seems to have spent the last 7 years hanging around politics makes enough money to donate $30,000 to a leadership campaign candidate. After tax.

He declared the loan to Elections Canada - as required by law - and if the money was not his then he would be in violation of the law. If someone is suggesting a law has been broken please say so and provide proof because anything else would be a smear job and we would expect Tories to aim a little higher. Of course, we could presume that Stephen Harper doesn't want to declare his doners because they are all big oil sand investors who just got a sweetheart exemption on greenhouse gas targets. Or perhaps they are American, or the gun lobby, or groups that want Alberta to seperate from Canada. Sure would be interesting to know.

6 Well, according to the standard Dion seems to be establishing, members of the party are allowed second chances when it comes to making inflammatory remarks about other party members. I wonder if Iggy's people will take full advantage of this standard. Dion is setting himself up for a whole mess of trouble. He is already in a weakened position and suffering from internal strife. This will only make things worse. I think this is part of a pattern with Dion. From the very start, he has acted as though the position of leader confers upon him an automatic authority over others in the party. But it doesn't work that way. You have to establish your authority over others. I don't think Dion is doing that.

7 Good point Dennis, now we should be waiting for the next challenge to Dion's leadership. Ignatieff was reported to have indirectly criticized the Dion-May alliance in a recent speech delivered in NB, by suggesting that the Liberal party should not have it's environmental policy written by others, and neither should they be identified as a one-issue party. The cracks are starting to show within the Liberal party, and Ignatieff certainly cannot be happy sitting in the HOCs while Dion makes an ass of himself, further demoralizing the party itself. The drop in financial support must be a prime indicator that many do not want Dion as their leader. If Ignatieff is a 'decisive' leader, he should be putting aside his 'loyalty' to Dion and making the welfare of the Liberal party his 'priority'.

11 Slap-happy is correct. Marrissen is on his way to Ottawa today. Will be meeting Ignatieff and Dion. Jamie Carroll will be asked to step aside at the end of the session and caucus will agree to this "graceful" exit. Carroll was behind Gerard Kennedy getting sacked in early April as Readiness Chair. Apparently for his behind the scenes preparation for a quick leadership race in the event of a spring election (loss) or better yet, Dion packing it in. It will be an interesting Caucus meeting on Wednesday. Liberal tradition is that the National Director of the Party is in attendance, however, this week he has been told to stay home. with files from..

13 Will Dion survive as Liberal leader by the time the next election rolls around? I think it's pretty well determined that he is a loser, and the only hope Liberals have of surviving is for their core voters to stand with them. It's now down to 30% support with no prospect of rising to say 40%. Quebecers are turning against the federal Liberals and Dion is behind all other party leaders in Quebec. The biggest Liberal stronghold is the GTA, Ignatieff's 'country'. Liberals know that Dion is "not a leader", and they know that Ignatieff can be a viable leader, as does Ignatieff. In the first vote of their leadership convention, Dion only had 17% grassroots support, while Ignatieff had ~30%. In the final brokered vote Dion won 55% to Ignatieff's 45%. Why was there such a reversal? Liberals must extricate themselves from the ill-fated Dion leadership .. because Canadians will not want another Liberal prime minister from Quebec .. plain and simple.

Beyond that, Carroll and Dion are both public figures whose positions and actions are subject to scrutiny as a result of their involvement in the political process. Editorializing on the likelihood of Carroll retaining his job and speculating on the relevance of a large personal debt is hardly libel. Fair comment is in play.

17 Ted, where is the slander ? To me this seems like fair comment. If Dion had no debt to Carroll, than Dion is his own man. The 30k loan certainly provides the apperance of conflict of interest. Is this not fair speculation ? Did the $30k loan never happen ? Is there anything untrue in the story ? Where does the alleged slander occur, Ted ?

18 Chris: Yes, my sloppy bad. It is possibly libel not slander. As I've written/summarized in this post on defamation: - Defamation consists of statements which "tend to lower a person in the estimation of others or cause a person to be shunned or avoided or exposed to hatred, contempt or ridicule". Thus an assertion which does not suggest discreditable conduct by the plaintiff may still be defamatory if it imputes to him or her a condition calculated to diminish the respect and confidence in which the plaintiff is held. Clearly that is the case here. - A person's moral character in either a private or a public capacity is equally entitled to the protection of the law from defamatory attacks. This cuts both ways: being a public figure is not a shield against comment but nor is it a shield against defamation claims. Just because someone is in the public sphere does not mean they can't be defamed. So, clearly, the post is defamatory. Next question: is there a defence. - The defence of fair comment might apply here but I don't think it does. Fair comment requires the defendant to establish that: (a) the words complained of are recognizable by the ordinary viewer as comment, although the comment may consist of, or include inferences from, facts [Possibly true here]; (b) the comment is based on true facts set out in the article or broadcast or clearly indicated in it [Proven fact: a loan was made; unproven fact: that Dion told the others to "go pound sand" because of his loan]; (c) the comment is on a matter of public interest [True here]; and (d) the comment is one which a person could honestly make on the facts proven, and some authorities indicate must, at least if it imputes dishonourable motives, be fair, in the sense that a fair-minded person could believe it. So the crux of the matter rests on whether the assertion that Dion may be reluctant to fire Carroll because of his indebtedness is an unproven fact or a comment. Close call, I'll admit but the last element of the fair comment rules is the clincher: - The defence fails if the plaintiff shows that the defendant was actuated by express malice. It is here that the question of actual belief in the comments made becomes an issue. If it is a comment, then does Steve actually believe it? or is he just spreading rumours and gossip with malice. Wouldn't be too hard for an attorney to pick out enough blog posts to prove quite definitively that Mr. Janke here has a whole heck of a lot of malice toward anything Liberal. So the defence would easily fail. Fortunately for Steve he, like the rest of us bloggers, are pretty much nobodies so I don't think Dion or Carroll are going to sue him.

That was innuendo about Jason's competence as a lawyer! That's actionable. The Liberal party is going to sue me! Oh no! My comment that the Liberal party implies that Liberals sue everybody. 22 Wow Ted, those had to hurt. Best go back to threatening rival Liberals Ted, as the court party gets all worked up about court stuff. Conservatives, not so much. We use lawyers as they were intended. Lawyers are tools, just like screwdrivers. Need something screwed, without any BS, buy a screwdriver. 25 I would like to comment on 2 things First Libral fund raising has tanked not because we cannot deliver patronage but because the political fund raising laws have changed .. THE large corporate contributors who were the backbone of Liberal financing would still be giving if they could The new party executive was mandated to take fund raising to a member driven system but so far this seems to be failing but 6 months may not be a fair peroid to condemn their effort. Second The Dion Ignatieff equation to me at the convention and post leadership has been misinterpreted for political purpose. The use of 17 Dion and 30 Iggy is not a true picture of the convention . Iggies 30 were devoted Iggy people . The supporters of the majority of the other candidates had an ideolodical commanality which would inevitablely lead them to support anyone but Iggy. The delegates voted to take the party in a direction not supported by Iggy. For me as a delegate this was partially but importantly his position on the war,the mission and Bush foreign policy. When Dion apointed Iggy foreign affairs critic and announced after a caucus meeting that he supported the mission I wondered if the delegates at the convention would have chosen a different champion to represent their values.
