I know it's hard to believe, but I wonder if Farhan Chak is planning to run for office again.

Remember Farhan Chak? He was the Liberal nominee for Edmonton-Mill Woods-Beaumont who was forced to resign when it was revealed that he had told a bunch of whoppers on his application.

Well, like the cat in the Harry Miller song, he comes back when you expect that his story is over and done.

Blair Wilson might be able to fight the Liberal Party

Disgraced former Liberal MP Blair Wilson has not given up the fight. Embroiled in a controversy over allegations of election spending irregularities, he has been told by the Liberal Party that he will not be allowed to run in the next election for the Liberals.

The justification? Though Wilson has yet to have had any of the charges against him tested in a court, the Liberal Party has concluded that Wilson was not forthcoming on his applications to run as an MP.

Blair Wilson has promised to fight this decision, and has retained Jay Straith, the same lawyer who represented David Oliver in his fight against the NDP.

Looking over the rules, I think Blair Wilson has a fighting chance.

The Liberal Green Light Committee needs a new light bulb

How did Blair Wilson ever pass the tests all nominees must undergo before being allowed to stand for the Liberal Party as a candidate for a riding? Some of the news being reported about Blair Wilson's resignation today makes me wonder if that part of the process is going to undergo some intense, and perhaps uncomfortable, scrutiny.

Curiously, though this incident on balance is just more bad news for Stephane Dion, in one way, it might work in his favour.

Farhan Chak has bowed to pressure and has informed the Liberal Party that he will not be the candidate for Edmonton-Mill Woods-Beaumont. I have some thoughts on all of this.

8 You should be carefull about saying he was lying about the criminal charges. It may be that he was issued a "Form 9" which is an " Apparance Notice Issued by a Peace Officer" and is based on an allegation of an offence and not an actual charge. If that was the case and the allegations were withdrawn before he was formally charged then there was no requirement for him to disclose. I say that for your benefit not his. His writings and lying about credentials is disgusting enough on their own. I'd just hate to see you dragged into a defamation action as a way to get back at you.

11 Good work Steve. I wish we had someone like you back in 1993. I lived in Markham Ont., then and the liberals nominated Jag Bhaduria, a man who would appear to have lied about his background, eduction, and experience, threatened his employer with violence and obtained his nomination fraudulently.He was elected in 1993 and Markham residence tried to get him to step down. Finally he was dumped by the liberals and they washed there hands of him. If we had someone like you at that time, he might never had been elected.I volunteered for the Reform party back then so I heard a lot of what went on.

14 George Bush is an incompetent no doubt but if what they say in the media is true than this Mr. Chak character is a whining baby and a serious embarrassment to himself, his family, his community and his party. This man seems to be destroying the credibility of minorities and minorities alike across Canada. His 15 minutes are up and after this any liberal or otherwise would be a bigger fool than Mr. Chak himself to go near him. He talks about defamation lawsuits? But does he really want people to dig further into his skeleton closet? Who knows what else we might uncover. The story surrounding this loser just seems to get worse and he is just a low level nobody right now and it looks like he is going to stay that way. He needs to apologize to his supporters for being such a dumb SOB (excuse the language but this man just seems so stupid to me that I am outraged). It appears he gives "stupidity" as it applies to Canadian Politics a whole new meaning. I mean some of the postings on this website are so emotional and detailed that you think Mr. Chak himself is writing them. No he couldnÂ’t be that stupid. The tragedy is that he has somehow convinced at least a few individuals (with Canadian citizenship) that he deserves their vote. I wonder what they think of him now. Well not to worry because his only political option left is to go back to Durham and attempt a successful bid for class clown.

15 At first I was doubtful and perhaps in someways hopeful but now I have to agree that I think Chak is a pathetic loser with no political future in Canada and thank you Steve for exposing this nut. But Miss Cindy Carlton has posted that she has known the Chak Family for 20 years and that the father was a police officer in Toronto (along with many other intimate details). She may be basing this on what the family has told her and we have all seen how deceptive Mr. Chak can be. Someone should check to see if this fellow actually was a police officer; I mean impersonating a police officer is a serious offence in Canada and intuition tells me that perhaps the apple has not fallen too far from the tree. I don't like making false accussations so I would avoid labelling his claim to being a former police officer false but I certainly would not take his word for it as we have already seen how much trouble Mr. Chak has in being forthcoming and strait forward.

Actually, that was one of two Liberal ridings in Edmonton for a long time. However, the riding was held by Kilgour, initially a PC candidate that flipped to the Liberal party when Mulroney tanked. So "almost certainly could never win" is over the top, IMHO. Pretty f*ing unlikely? Another story, although that riding is pretty high in immigrant %age, so Liberal is not impossible.

Now they have turned to advising other people on how they should conduct their politics. Great. 5 It's up to the people of the riding to usher him out. If the Liberals in the riding are happy with that representative, it's birds of a feather. Dion has far more pressing issues, he's got himself in knots worrying about the poor terrorist prisoners. That would be the ones who if let loose would blow up our Troops and behead the resisters in Afghanistan. They do not fight fair, they set mines and run to rat holes. As Dion says, it's hard to do priorities. His are nowhere near those of the Canadian people.

That's why there is so much anger about this. 11 Interesting how silent Mr. Dion has been on this controversy over the last two weeks. None of the Liberals are asking why. They should. Instead it appears that comments like the one by Devon are the responses? Two nights ago, U.S. TV/Radio host Glen Beck offered different views on the climate change debate. The attack emails sent to Beck last night from those opposed to offering differing views on the topics nearest to their hearts were shocking. It appears increasingly, that as the Liberals race headlong to the left of the political spectrum that their own members are abandoning them. The Liberals were able to fundraise a mere half a million dollars in the first quarter of 2007. The NDP raised over $1.2 million. There were only about 5000 donors to the Liberal Party, compared to over 42,000 Conservative donors. I wonder if the Liberals will take the summer to re-tool their once proud political machine. If they were smart they would thank Dion for a job done, and run a leadership race. BKG

Farhan Chak's doctorate degree in question

Farhan Mujahid Chak has some problems on his hands. As the Liberal Party candidate for a riding in Alberta, he has been in the news dealing with the fallout of extreme-sounding writings of his, and serious firearms-related criminal charges that he seems to have not disclosed to the Liberal Party.

I'm going to add a new one to this list. His doctorate from the University of Durham? No such thing.

6 I have an idea that will allow Mr. Dion to save face: Mr. Dion, rather than field a candidate, will endorse the Green candidate in Edmonton-Mill Woods-Beaumont. This would be in exchange for the Green Party staying out of Calgary Southwest. Jason Cherniak could then claim this had nothing to do with Mr. Chak, but is merely the most likely way to unseat Stephen Harper. :-) I think this will be the final straw for Mr. Chak, unless he can prove that the university is in error and his PhD degree is legitimate.

7 Another inconvenient truth that Dion doesn't want to deal with, and the media mostly ignores as well. There's a big looming problem for Dion and the Libs. And they should see it coming, since they have been on the delivering end in previous election campaigns (Randy White documentary for example) It's that the CPC war room is probably sitting on all kinds of dirt on wannabe Liberal MPs. Just waiting to spring them on Dion, at the most inconvenient of times, when the media will be FORCED to report on it, and the voters will be paying much closer attention. Harper is clever enough to hold his fire on stuff, wait until the time is right to spring his surprises. And not only are the Libs relying on marble-mouthed, muddle-headed Dion with numerous microphones in his face to spin stuff away. But the Libs are also too broke to have any kind of fast-reaction war room ready to help Dion out. The next campaign is going to be verrrrrrrrrrrry interesting !

I wonder if this good detective will not ultimately undermine the cause. The CPC, as noted by Calgary Junkie, likely has scads of scandals waiting in the wings to pour on the Liebrals in an election campaign when they may help swing voters our way. The other conundrum is- if the four year election proposal passes, what strategy will fall from that? The dilemma is- do we out these wrongs and give the chance to the reds to recover or do we wait in hopes of delivering the coup de grace when it really counts? Tough call. Is there any way to vet with the war room first? We've been burned by the CPC's desperate attempts to capture the hearts and minds of the Ontario and Quebec voters- read the Western Standard for more on this.

With respect to the man in the street it might be a violation. However, anytime a person steps forward as a candidate for public office, he or she becomes a public figure, as Chak has done. Moreover, Chak gave out some of this "personal & privileged" information himself when he included his academic credentials as an important factor in what voters should consider. Since he appears to have misrepresented his credentials, he cannot now complain when people attempt to set the record straight.

The value of the degrees bestowed by the university would be useless if anyone could simply claim any degree they wished. The university has the right to reveal Chak has not completed his PhD. I would say the university even has an obligation to defend its reputation when confronted with a fraudulent PhD claimant.

As a bona fide, tuition-all-paid-up PHD candidate who has not defended, I think I can say with some certainty that not having done your "viva", Chak's cutesy term for his oral examination, and not having graduated means he's not a PhD. Like any other degree, there's a big difference between being finished and not being finished. The oral exam is an integral part of the process. Usually, it's held soon after the thesis referees have agreed that the thesis is complete and ready to be defended. People who enrolled in a PhD program are able to use "PhD Cand." (PhD Candidate), and those who are close to having the thesis finished can use "PhD ABD" (All But Dissertation) and may even be calkled "doctor" as a courtesy but, once out of a PhD program, you lose the right to these titles and join the ranks of the legions of people who have started PhD programs and who have never finished. The privacy issue is unimportant. Unless universities answer questions like this, there will be many, many people using bogus credentials. The only way to keep credentials -- or lack of them -- private is not to use them.

He is a few months away from his degree, assuming everything goes without a hitch (I have no reason to believe there would be any problems).

How odd that while several non-Politicians have been found guilty of accepting them money and the Judges agree that Politician gave it , we have yet to see Martin or Chretien be held responsible for naming who they appointed to dole out the money or who in Quebec ran on a fraudulent Election with the dirty Money . Someone somewhere in the Goverment had to give permission for the money to go out the door , and someone had to have refused to investigate the Scam after a Leader in the National Party body had sent Paul Martin the letter alerting him to kickbacks and cash envolopes used to funnel tax dollars back to Liberals. If Martin and Chretien are to be believed , then it's a soory state for canada that POliticians can rob us blind and use the Sgt.Schultz defence that as willfully ignorant and saw nothing, and heard nothing. No wonder Dion is crazy for power to smear the Conservative and label our Soldiers War-Criminals , he knows Paul and Jean set up a money scam to steal millions for Liberal election and have Tax funded lawyers defend them in Court as not responsible as P.M.'s even though the Salary was increased by Chretien because he claimed the Responsibilities were greater the George Bushes and he get 250'000 ayear. Shame on the NDP, Bloc,Liberals,and Sikh MP that clapped when Dion failed to denouce the Nazi reference for canada's policy that isn't based on Al Gore or Michael Moore's farce-u-mentaries that preech doom and gloom to inflict fear so people will blindly accept their Doctrines .

6 While the riding had gone Liberal for a number of years when David Kilgour left the PC's to join his brother-in-law (John Turner), it quickly returned to the Conservative fold after Kilgour's retirement. Between political and character considerations, I think the voters in the riding will wish to keep the status quo. However, if Mr. Chak does indeed own a shotgun, I would vote for him to ride beside the stage coach driver to protect the strong box. We'll just nickname him Yosimite Farhan.

8 I find the use of the term 'exonerated' an overstatement in cases like this where multiple witnesses who were positive at the time suddenly have a change of heart when it comes time to go to court. As a well-known broadcaster who was also a lawyer one said "Being acquitted by the courts in this country hardly makes you Little Lord Fauntleroy". I heartily agree with Libby's statement about a pig in a poke as long as it has a Liberal stamp. Hope it doesn't happen here.

Farhan Chak is snapping back. He is arguing that his prior views have changed and that the firearms charges were dropped. But that doesn't matter. When he applied as a Liberal Party candidate, he was obligated to tell the Liberal Party all this information. And it is clear that the Liberal Party did not know.

2 Chak also has one characteristic which is all too typical of the modern big-L Liberal: the inability to really deal with his past. If Chak wants to keep his nomination, the best way to do that is to find something he's done, today, that (a) is just as "newsworthy" as his past history and (b) a far better "defining" characteristic of his persona today. Mind you, given that Mike Lake took the riding with 58.6 percent of the vote, and the Liberals only scored 21.1 percent, this is probably one of the ridings that Dion should be able to parachute in someone for his "qualified female" quota, since it's one of those "nothing to lose" ridings.

We deserve to have intelligent, people in parliament who are there for the good of Canada, who have only one agenda going on....to serve the people of Canada, rather than their own weak egos. I was curious about whether it was sawed off or not, because posessing and especially using a weapon that is classed as prohibited is (or should be) a very serious offense. 15 This happened in 1993. There was no gun control at that time. The enabling legislation,C-68 was passed in 1995, coming into full effect in 2003. Back in the good old days,one had rifles etc hung on racks in the back windows of pick up trucks. What is illegal is to do what this guy with the same name as the candidate did. Farhan Chak holds some strange views for a person running for political office in Canada. Running for the Liberal Party, he is an apologist for terrorists and a promoter of conspiracy theories that shift the responsibility for terrorism onto Western governments. 2 Multiculturalism, Immigration will replace the Canada we knew with a cauldron of foreign values, idealogy and customs washing the Canadian identity away. This is a flawed policy. I'm tired of being asked to do all the accomodating. We better be watching Europe, what a mess it is, with jihadists now in their midst who make no bones about their end goals. 29 Mr. Janke should read the Cohen Commission Report as well as the UN Security Resolutions on the events of 1982 of Sabra and Shatila. This not only confirmed the wrongful actions of the Israeli military and the attrocities committed but also was corroborated by reliable international reports from the Red Cross and other reputable NGO's Perhaps the Red Cross, Israeli Government and the United Nations are all conspiracy theorists. I would love to hear Mr. Janke's answer to what he thinks of the UN, Climate Change or Women's Rights? It is very irresponsive of this site to try and defame someone who is only confirming international facts that occurred over two decades ago. Unfortunately this site goes through a lengthy analysis of interpreting words not written. It is something that disgusts those who believe in positive discussions which must begin by addressing the problem. Thoughout history, there have been monstors who have tried to discredit individuals by blaming the victims and calling them extremists and terrorists. The same can be said about this site. Israel is occupying someone else's land, regardless of how you want to classify the acts of the Palestinians, this is not something I would be ignoring when talking about the difficulties in the Middle East. By commenting on someone's religion as if it is something to be worried about confirms the racism that permeates from this site. Others such as Mr. Khanna and Mr. Singh are also using their religious/ethnic backgrounds to show their discrimination. They, though, are a minority within their own minorities since the Liberal Party stands for ALL citizens including minorities. I hope people take the time to read the full book review that Mr. Chak wrote and see how this site has butchered it for their ill-natured attempt at defamation. Anybody who gives credence to Mr. Janke and his nonsense should be ashamed of themselves as a person who is augmenting hatred. People like that have no place in Canada nor in civil society.

The father was a police officer in Toronto and left the job and came to Edmonton to become an accountant. Farhan ChakÂ’s father has been heavily involved in all communities regardless of ethnicity or religion. He is friends with several Sikhs and Hindus who have been backing the ChakÂ’s in their campaign. Sital Nanuan is an absolute clown who is so bitter over his defeat (despite several cheating tactics employed to earn more votes) that he has set out to smear the good Chak family name. Farhan ChakÂ’s father has worked for CKER radio and Des Punjab Radio, which is run by Sikhs. The Chak family lost a lot in the Kashmir earthquake. That is a fact. They also donated money to the Kashmir earthquake. Mr. Chak lost several friends due to the earthquake and his sister and her family had to move out of Azad Kashmir to Islamabad. Again fact. Despite being from the Kashmir region and resenting IndiaÂ’s policy in regards to Kashmir, this family is still friends with several Sikhs and Hindus (several of who agree and respect their viewpoints). Just because you disagree with a governmentÂ’s policy does not mean you are attacking the country or automatically anti-Semitic. There is another point that I will make since this website is keen on talking about irrelevant things such as middle names and what they mean. Do a search on KashmiriÂ’s and youÂ’ll find that Jewish people themselves claim that KashmiriÂ’s are the lost 12 tribes of Israel. KashmiriÂ’s have long been regarded as having a Jewish ancestry and refer to themselves as Beni Israel (Children of Israel). The Kashmiri language consists of Farsi and Hebrew elements and Kashmir is pronounced Koshur in Hebrew. Again just because Farhan Chak does not agree with some of IsraelÂ’s policy does not mean that he is an anti-Semitic and to label him as such, as well as a Muslim extremist is far from the truth. This young man is working towards the betterment of society and to bring together all cultures and religions. We are human first. Everything else is secondary. The articles Farhan Chak has written have been entirely taken out of context and it shows the ignorance of the conservatives and those that back them that they will do anything to make sure a Muslim does not get ahead in Canadian politics due to their racism and fear of minorities taking over. Just because you have one or two ethnic people in the conservative government doesnÂ’t take away from their ignorant and racist policies against immigrants and their plan to demolish multiculturalism in Canada. Conservatives often employ ethnic minorities (bribe them and what not) in order to cause destruction to other minorities. What better way to ruin the morale of minorities in Canada than by bribing and employing some of their own who can convince them that the best way is the conservative way. Once the conservatives achieve their goals IÂ’d like to see if Rahim Jaffer is even living in the country. I am sure some of you on here have seen The Birth of a Nation (aka the Clansmen) by D.W. Griffith. When I think conservatives I think D.W. Griffith. In that film which strangely echoes some Conservative policies, the only good BlackÂ’s are those that support racist Whites. Fascinating film and for those of you who havenÂ’t seen it I strongly suggest you watch it. IÂ’m sure youÂ’ll find pieces of yourselves within the film. Some of the comments on this website are disgusting regarding an attack on Muslims as being filthy just showing the hatred spewing from this site and than you actually have the nerve to bring up Rahim Jaffer. The charges laid against Chak have no basis whatsoever and if you did your research you would find that over 30% of Canadians have had charges laid against them at some point or another. This was a case of mistaken identity and Chak was exonerated and why this issue is being brought forth 15 years after the fact is beyond my understanding. Farhan Chak has gone on to get four degrees, which is a lot more than any of you will ever do in your lives. If he were really such a violent man heÂ’d be sitting in jail right now instead of having accomplished so much in his life. The entire family is rather gifted while FarhanÂ’s twin is a lawyer and works with Alberta Human Rights. This family believes in helping those less fortunate than them and have gained many friends over the years and unfortunately many enemies as well. Whether Farhan Chak goes on to go against Mike Lake or not is irrelevant, as he will go on to do great things whether anyone likes it or not. Justice will prevail.
