A couple of days ago I had an interesting talk with a senior member of a computer security firm on the topic of the GO Transit vandalism. I'd like to share some of the interesting details of that conversation.

Prosecute hackers? Hire them !
Find them and pay them to design systems that they can't break into. Then challenge other hackers to break the security, and hire the winner of that contest. In very short order you'll have some awfully serious security.

Infrared garage door openers? Maybe, but I've never seen one. As far as I know, they have always been radio-frequency gadgets. The older ones were fairly easy to hack if you had the right equipment. Even if you didn't, there were only 512 code combinations so that a determined hacker with a lot of time on his hands could open a door. RF will travel through a wooden door; infrared won't. The newer rolling code openers are much tougher to hack.

Great work on this issue Steve. The road signs as an example are certainly a sobering thought. One person's prank is another person's tragedy. I'm sure many people were smiling at the original 'Stephen Harper eats babies' prank. You've given them something a lot more substantial to think about.

actually what worries me is the hand shanking between the big telecom switches... the sig7 standard was never constructed for inherent security.. just imagine that you get into a big switch and just tweek the protocol so that you cascade down all the handoffs between you and all your competitors switches... ohhh well just a thought

I fail to see why "specific laws" need to be in place to prosecute vandals just because the medium and the tools they used are "digital".
In my opinion this is the classic copout of the lazy and ignorant...just find the jackass and charge him with destruction of public property, criminal trespass and endagering the public.

Protecting these systems is counter to the goals of inovation and profit, that's why they are vunerable. Inovation is the drive that creates profit in technology. If you leave your front door open eventually someone will rob you blind and you'll learn quick on what to do to lock it.
These company's need hackers to make their products better. It is said that ignorance of the law is no excuse well ignorance of technology is no excuse either! Don't utilize technology unless you understand the risks otherwise you deserve what you get you bunch of tofu farting faries!

lighten up.it was a harmless joke which pointed out a fault in the system.better pranksters exploit system weakness's than other's with a more sinister agenda.
Though I have yet to figure what,if anything of a serious nature could possibly have happened had one other than a prankster/hacker discovered this weakness in the go sign.

i have been folloewing your posts concerning this alleged "liberal attack" on the unsuspecting Go Train riders and am increasingly dimayed with the path you are taking. As someone who would discribe themselves as a small c conservative I find that your reaction to this harmless (and rather amusing) prank is indicative of the systemic problem that the right has, especially in the east. You need to learn to laugh at yourselves! Why be such a hard ass? If you devoted as much energy to resposiable or productive activities as you clearly have done "tracking down" the person you feel is reponsiable then the consevative agenda might not be such a scary notion as it is for a good number of Canadians.
Have a sence of humor, because if you can't laugh at yourself outhers will laugh at you.

Conservativewithhumor? Sorry, but breaking the law is breaking the law... it has nothing to do with what is funny. If I went up to any other advertisement and did the same thing -- posting a message across it -- I would be a vandal. What makes this joker any different?
And what do you care if Steve tracks this down? Perhaps your moniker should be ConservativeWithaGodComplex if it is so imporant for you to dictate what somebody should or shouldn't do with their own free time.
Personally, I tend to agree with Steve's interpretation of events. Somebody who isn't afraid of trouble wouldn't have gone through all of the effort this Joshua did. My only question is this:
If the sign could only be controlled locally via short-wave -- i.e. inside the particular GO train -- and this Joshua says he saw it "that day" himself, does that not mean he has just admitted to being at the scene? After all, GO said that the sign was affected in only 1 car on Thursday and Friday and three cars the following Monday.

ConservativeWithHumour, This whole Toronto Tempest in a Teapot is mainly humour and you are part of it when you fail to sense the humour start to finish.
Janke sure knows how to dig though. The only digging I tried was to get a background peek at all of Kinealla*s web surfing. I found the whole log and except for a few mistaken sites, it seemed reasonable. I kind of felt a little guilty though. So even if it can be done it*s batter not to.

Joshua hasnt retracted anything. Joshua has denied doing anything, and then followed up that denial with a bunch of activity that can only be considered suspicious -- covering his tracks, etc?

I said that I saw the signs...just like hundreds of others did that day. I didn't say that I saw them being programmed. I see the signs everyday on my way to school. So when the sign that usually displays messages about dick pills and timeshare vacations was displaying a baby eating message...ya I noticed.
I took down the blog postings after a reporter sent me a message asking to interview me...thinking I was the hacker. I sent her an email back telling her I was not the hacker, but she had already written the article. I hadn't checked Steve's site in a while, so had not seen the posting fingering me as the hacker. I don't live on my computer nor do I check MySpace emails and blogs every 10 minutes. The blog postings came down because I thought that people were taking it the wrong way...which obviously they were.

Actually, knowing a bit about defamation laws, I think Steve may have stepped into it deeply. If this kid Joshua did not do it or, more technically, if Steve can't show that he did it, then it is pretty cut and dried. Steve accused him of committing a crime and he hasn't retracted in any way. His concession that Joshua didn't do it is so full of additional libellous inuendo that it makes things worse for him not better. Bloggers aren't in any way exempt from the rules of defamation that apply to the rest of us.
Tony G, judges don't get to decide which cases come before them or not, who gets to file or not, and the pleadings for defamation cases if they do get brought rarely get struck. Meaning you could try to defend it but on what grounds? That it is minor goes to how much money Joshua could sue Steve for not whether he was legally wronged by Steve.
The interesting thing would be figuring out just how much he could get from Steve. And for that you'd have to consider how many viewers have read any of the 10 or so posts on this subject and how many have read that article (if it was sourced from Steve). Add to that because others have linked to at least some of his posts.
Steve, I know lots of libel lawyers if Joshua decides to insist upon his rights.

Steve has printed nothing that isn't demonstrably true. Steve never "suggested" anything. Joshua's actions, and his actions alone, consistently suggested that he was the culprit. Steve pointed that out.

This media looks big to us, the users, but in fact it is tiny and very narrow in focus.
99% of Torontonians may not know what a Blog site is much less spend time in our political rightish area.
Those who do blog may well be into games, chat and porn.
A judge would have to know all the job opportunities Joshua lost due to being exposed here.

I think there was libel here, but TG's got it right, there are minimal damages here. Probably not enough to bother suing over.
What I object to, quite frankly, is the style of Steve's of going after non-conservatives with this kind of all on attack. It's one thing to go after politicians - because after all everything goes with them, right? - but Steve also goes after private citizens and spreads rumours of criminal wrongdoing. This kid may be a jerk, may think the GO Transit sign was funny (like many conservatives, mind you), but Steve doesn't so he's got to impune criminality on him.
He's done it before and I think it really reduces blog-land to the worst kind of rumour and spreading machine instead of an information source. Reproducing the worst of what you criticize in the "mainstream media".

Steve has shown some enthusiasm in this event,and that*s natural enough when one is having a bit of fun.

Sue him for what it would have cost to advertise his "message" on the trains plus the cost of the potenial lost advertising for any messages that were suppoed to be displayed while his scrolled plus the cost of the investigation plus legal fees. Sue him right into bankruptcy

The first thing that should happen is that this outdated technology be removed from the trains.
If the perp broke a law he should be charged. After being fined he should be thanked for alerting the people who need to know that this could have been a lot worse. When you think of the alarming things that could have been scrolling as opposed to the nonsense that he actually decided to put on, well, it makes you go phew! That was a close call!

Charge him? No, just let civil justice work its way. I'd expect him to be sued, to be offered terms of settlement including restitution, for him to accept sheepishly and for the technological loophole to be closed. Just another day in the big city.

At best, this constitutes public mischief - a slap on the wrist. The punishment will be considered based on the accused's, whomever that may be, criminal record, if any, in the past.
He, its always a he in this kinds of affairs, could be ordered to pay damages to the company who provides the screens as well. It won't be much; a few thousand dollars at the most.
I doubt the person responsible did this for some "commie" motivation as your commentors (inevitably and always) suggest. The person responsible was looking to send a message that would attract the most attention - to himself and his "cleverness". He would likely have had a similar slur against Paul Martin if he was still in office.

Believe it or not, the Canadian justice system can do multiple things at once. Included in that multi-tasking is vigorously prosecuting a vandal-and that's what this person is-and, if convicted, levying whatever jail time and/or fines are allowed within the statutes violated.

Harper has started the tax cutting. Next will come the off-loading of responsibilities and then perhaps the debt will be shared by the over burdened provinces and underfinanced Federal government.

You should have noticed by now that inefficient and corrupt bureaucracies are not confined to government, and yes, you pay for those too.
We need bureaucracies so the answer is to be vigilant. You can have huge bureaucracies like Toyota and be efficient and lawful, or you can have large bureaucracies like Enron or Worldcom and be the opposite. With good leadership, management and good corporate ethics, the size of the bureaucracy is a non-issue. It only becomes an issue when leadership fails.
That is why so many large and small countries and companies struggle. Good management anticipates and takes care of their responsibilities, which if you look closely, are always responsibilities to people both employees and customers of which only a portion have voting rights.

There is a simple way to get rid of deficit spending and the debt. We need to finance the operation of the Federal government in the lawful creation of the money supply by the Federal government at little or no interest as is set out in the Constitution(BNA Act which is still part of it). Our Federal government has to take back this right that it gave to private Banks and stop borrowing from them at high interest rates. Our debt is only interest owed to private Banks, a situation that was created by our Federal government not exercising it`s legal right to create the Nations money at little or no interest. When this happens we can be debt free and have all the benefits of the money thaat is going into the hands of private Banks that are reaping record profits through legalized theft of our Nations wealth

The state doesn't operate like that. It steals my money, and without my consent, uses it to undertake stupid projects.

I like most of it. In fact most people like their government services. I don't want to deal with my own garbage disposal, road building, sewage, water purification, etc. I have a life! If you have time to vote on every issue you would have to be on welfare. No one person agrees with every single thing the government does but neither do I want to protest every time they decide to place a speed bump on a road I use. The people living on that road probably were after their local politician for months or years to get it. Everyone doesn't like everything. There are eleven million people living in Southern Ontario and it only works because there is cooperation and give and take.

I'm not sure about the Go Bylaws - they seem very selective about enforcing them. I've only ever seen them check for tickets (and that is only down about once every 6 weeks on average). Yet I can hardly navigate the parking lot due to illegally parked cars.

This is a no win situation. Your mistake was not your speculation, your mistake was naming someone with half-baked evidence.

Hi-tech? Sorry. We had a similar sign at work back in the 1990's: a LED display with a remote for programming it. Heck, I built something similar back in 1989 for a school project, although my lab partner and I never did get the remote working the way we wanted to. And the technology has only become easier to come by since then.

Not to encourage any illegal acts or anything, but in my opinion this was a pretty clever hack, and although the sentiment expressed was a little childish, all in all it's pretty funny. The hacker could have said a lot worse but instead picked something that is harmlessly amusing.
Truth is, I'm not convinced that this wasn't the work of a conservative trying to making a parody of the anti-Harper ads prevalent during the election.

Me thinks the ultmate joke is that reportely this message floated along for 4 days!!!! Proving no one reads these stupid signs. As for the perpetrator, some left wing computer nut decided to have a giggle. Lets face it, when the trendy Libreals that ran this country for so long said that Harper eats babies or worse for so long, some dope might actually believe them.
All in all, a tempest in a very small pot and I too got a chuckle.

I can't either, and note that just after noon yesterday, all communication pretty much stopped at SDA. Kate asked for help from some tech savvy reader...and hopefully, the "technical glitch" will be ironed out soon.
Reading this post, though, it has occurred to me--well, actually, it occurred to me a few seconds after it became evident that posting a comment on SDA was KAPUT--that there could easily be some ideologically motivated technological hanky panky going on here--as in the "Stephen Harper Eats Babies" signs.
SDA had some great comments on the new budget, as always skewering the ridiculous and groundless criticisms of the Librano$ and Dippers; 'any chance, I wonder, of someone having a political motive for shutting down SDA comments?
tony the media moley certainly sounded like a happy camper on a post a few days ago, quite uncharacteristic of him. Might he know something we don't know...? 'Just wondering...

I've worked with a similar company as an editor for sports info company, and we used pager frequencies to transmit. If that's the way they transmit, the case suggesting a hacker just got a lot more tenuous. You'd need to know the "pin" number, the dialer number and potentially have the dialer software.
The other options would be a hand-held remote for the LED sign, or a hard-wired terminal in a back area on the train. The latter is doubtful, and I'm not sure if the remotes are linked to the individual sign or not. If they aren't, then the case against a hacker just got a lot more believable!
I'm not 100% sure on how it works, as times change, and I haven't been there in over five years.
But it still sounds fishy.

I'm told remote controls to do this are available for something like US$20 at Sam's Club. They are intended for the LED signs which said superstore sells to small businesses; and have a range of about 7 metres.

I don't think the intent was to presume that transit users were "stupid enough to vote for Harper." I think the intent was to express frustration with how Harper's been doing.
The media may not be giving Harper a "honeymoon," but the opinion polls certainly are. He's not making the errors that Joe Clark and Paul Martin did, during their mandates, and he's actually enjoying better press coverage than Brian Mulroney did during the first year of his government.
There are people out there, too partisan to have lives, who gnaw at their livers at the thought that Harper should enjoy such good ratings. They cannot express themselves through letters to the editor or through blogging because for the most part they think it's either not going to get through or it's preaching to a small audience. Hence the vandalism -- and make no mistake, it is vandalism.

This is serious. The go train is government owned and the only venue for this company's media product.
I'm a partner in a Toronto based ad agency. I let them know that I will be informing my clients about this, as well as contacting others in the industry, including senior media people.

A credit card was hi-jacked recently.
The card invoice listed a paysite $35.99 charge and 800 number.
The charge was fraudulent. Phoning the 800 number, the paysite informs of a charge to an *Adult* site membership. Never heard of it..[B….. On B…..]. Victims will know.
Not able to spell it out. Some young reader may go there and lose the family savings. Avoiding lawsuits here.
Two charges to the card… $400 - UK. Server and $380 Isreali server, were refused . Card had $300 open window.
To check the card validity, the crooks charged $35.99 to the
B….. on B….. web site. That did pay.
Theory: Crooks always prefer cash. Crooks paid themselves the $35.99. Ergo, they own the adult website the money was paid to.
Ok, Interpol… go get *em. You know where they hang out.

It is clearly meant to advertise the power of advertising. Any business person or marketing person is going to read that and walk away thinking about that... and then... boing! realize, hey! I'm thinking about what someone put on a subway ad! What a great idea. And then call up the GO Transit marketers for adspace.
The TTC billboard advertising company did the same thing a few years back. For Toronto riders, remember the big white letters on green background series? One was, if I recall correctly, just the word SEX writ large with the very small print - forcing you to go up to the billboard to read it - underneath saying "(you see... advertising works)". Another one was even more straightforward: "Advertising Works" in large print and in very small print underneath: "if it didn't, you wouldn't be reading this".
The conservative bloggers really have been floundering ever since the Cons got in government. So used to being critical of everything and seemingly with no ability to do anything else but continuing to see the Vast Left Wing Media Conspiracy abound.
p.s. you've also just proven that the advertisement works, by the way.
