3 The Liberal Party spends more time on working for itself than for Canada. I have a suggestion for Steven Harper. Take a cue from the Liberals and begin capitalizing on the separation movement in Western Canada. Forget about Quebec separatism for awhile. The Quebec separatist threat has worked for the Liberals for, well, as long as I can remember. It has won votes for them across Canada as well as in Quebec. The threat of Western Canada separation is real and could be put to good advantage by Harper by simply standing up for Canada and speaking out against *all* those who would break it up. I don't want to see Canada separate. I've been to the east coast of Canada and throughout Quebec many times. I used to live in Ontario. But I can tell you that the four western provinces have good reason to be tired of being treated as second class citizens and 'unequal' to Central Canada. While Quebec is, in many ways, 'France West', Ontario is 'Europe West'. People in Western Canada are much more individualist in their thinking. We like taking care of ourselves. We don't live with one hand stuck out in front of us, palm up. It's time for Harper to play the Western Canada separation card and speak out for Canada. If Quebecers heard this and started to think about others in Canada who are also not happy, it might make a few of them realize that they are not the only Canadian province that has reason to be unhappy with the Liberal Party.

4 I agree with John. While Quebec can threaten all it wants, western provinces can actually afford to separate, so the "threat" is real. Then watch everyone in Ontario want to immigrate ;-)

5 I am amazed that Albertans haven't played the seperation card, believe me that is the only threat that may wake up Ontarioans. If (and I only hope it doesn't happen)the Cons and Harper lose the next election then I would like to see Mr. Harper return to Alberta and run for Kleins job and then play the separtion card and mean it. 6 Hear, Hear John! I would add that Western Canadians need to become more publicly vocal about separating. The four Western provinces would be very sucessful as an independent entity, given the wealth of natural resources and the Port of Vancouver, which is the busiest Western port in North America. Do we really need the east? And in the end, if Quebec or any other province separates, then who cares. I can't understand the provincial inter-dependence the politicians believe we must have. I think, as John says, too many people are enjoying the "nanny-state" mentality and handouts instead of getting off their butts and making a success of themselves! But then, if the people became too independent, would we really need all these politicians and their blather!

12 A dialogue needs to begin within Alberta in regards to what the steps would be to remove the "cord" from Ottawa. Once all the facts are out in regards to how we begin to establish our own area of North America, then and only then can the population make an educated decision on how to proceed. It's easy to say "ya, lt's get the hell out", which is exactly what is going to happen, but all residents need to be informed of what we need to do to get the ball rolling, for real.

13 While "Googling" the net for "Ontario Separatist", the most common link refers to the fact that "There's no such thing" as an Ontario separatist. I commend the people of Quebec who long ago learned to play the Canadian federalist game. I commend the people of Alberta who are slowly coming around to the facts of life in Canada. It's high time that the people of Ontario woke up to the fact that an independant Ontario is the way to go. The federal government has long-since abandoned any sense of "national unity" in order to molify special interest/ethnic groups. I was born in Canada: so were my parents and grandparents. I realize that this makes me a second-class Canadian, so why fight it? The next election is coming very soon. I'll have a "Vive l'Ontario Libre" sign on my lawn (only in English!) 6 Here's how the Liberals stay in power in perpetuity. Create yet another social program, get the people hooked, then mismanage it and run it with your friends and family. Soon the price starts going up, and so do the taxes. But we can't do away with the program now that everyone's hooked. 4 I've always hated the "cat bounce" term, but I agree with the principle. With respect to the poll done by Allan Gregg, I ran the "unofficial" search and saw that an Allan Gregg has consistently donated $250/yr to the Libs (except 01 & 02, I think, for some reason), but no other parties. Probably just a coincidence.

5 Perhaps the 'bounce' part is because staunch Liberal supporters just can't live without the stench of corruption. As soon as this aroma starts to fade, or is threatened with removal, the diehards come out of the woodwork, looking for it again.

1 Angry, thanks for the shoutout. As a US citizen, I don't want to see Canada fall apart. While your government in Ottawa has been less than friendly to us in recent years, there's a lot to respect about the people of Canada. Yes, if any province got out of Canada and wanted to join the US, I suspect that would not be a problem. Our state governments are as varied as our states. But from everything I've read on posts the past few months -- coming from real people and not the dinosaurs of the MSM -- indicates to me that there is a unique Canadian identity that goes beyond the lameness of the far from unique national health care system. It's about surviving and thriving in conditions that are less than hospitable. It's about the ingenuity to make the most of what you have (yes, that's a shared trait with the US, but it's certainly valid north of the 49th). There is a social compact that was formed as a way to pull together to survive and thrive that creates a somewhat more collectivist mentality than in the States, yet still acknowledges the power of the individual to make good things happen for himself/herself. Just one man's view, that's all. If it's of value, take it. If not, pass on it. Godspeed and Free Canada!

2 The US poster has a point that our rotten winters have always forced those living in Canada to "collectivise" to some extent. If you don't share and co-operate with your neighbours you may not survive the winter. A related trait is that the resulting 'collective' will often tolerate the occasional wierd-o or oddball among us. The alternative of shunning or isolation could easily result in freezing or starving -- a punishment far in excess of the crime. These necessary cold weather pioneer traits for collectivity and tolerance still linger in our society. There is an argument that our collective enterprises (railways, Crown Corporations, health...) are consequences. Some of the same traits and outcomes are seen in countries in far-northern europe. There is a downside of course. Collectives are cautious, may resist positive changes, and often underperform more individualist societies. Tolerance fails its purpose if too many drop out with the expectation they will be carried by 'society'. The above history/sociology is intermixed with the initial purpose of this comment, which is on the role of our Bureaucrats in our recent federal government management failings -- "are the Bureaucrats part of the problem". I've watched blogs and MSM fairly closely and no one has as yet mentioned the seriously imbalanced ethnic makeup of our federal bureaucracy as a fairly evident underlying cause of failure. Perhaps we Canadians are just too nice to explore the obvious. Well over half the decision makers (the ones who can cut cheques) in our federal bureaucracy are ethnic French-Canadian (aka Quebecois). If their sentiments match their ethnic peers, and there is no reason to think otherwise, over half of these have a first loyalty to their tribal wish for low cost independence, and the balance are mostly indifferent. Either strong nationalism, strong policing, or both are needed to curb corruption in a civil service. This is especially true where divided loyalties are explicitly at play. I could outline the reasons, good and bad, that led over the decades to the current imbalanced situation . But I think I'll stop to see if others want to touch this topic. Wes

1 Actually, it was two polls. Another poll done for CTV and released today shows the same result. Although I do agree that one poll with an offbeat result isn't something I'd take seriously.

2 Of course, even with established pollsters, the manner of how the questions are phrased make all the difference. I really think when poll statistics are released that it should be mandatory to display the questions asked.

5 I'm with AGWN, seeing that this is a newbie and 1 oldster, it only is really one poll. The pessimistic comments are directionally correct if we get another poll from an established firm that shows similar numbers. The panicking is premature, however, as we saw the release of a GTA poll that was in sync with polling released previously that showed CPC wit the big mo. Environics released a poll wednesday, stories thursday, showing Libs at 41% in GTA and CPC at 35%, 6 up for CPC and 10 down for Libs (as compared to last election). Then the next day we see a national poll that has CPC behind Libs by 2% (each poll, absolute differs in GPC and SC), with a CPC slide of 10%. Take these polls together, and you would have national opinion converging significantly, with CPC being much more attractive in GTA and much less attractive outside of it. with Green, NDP, and BQ at equivalent levels? This also goes against polling done 3 days earlier. Fri sat sun polling by decima = 5 point lead for CPC, Mon tues wed poll for GPC = 2 point lead for LPC. We need more data. I like the idea of the gold watch theory, saying that PM was great at dealing with deficit, but is too honest to deal with the liberal party's corruption and his achievements are being destroyed by his coalition building. He's self destructing and CPC will build on his efforts. We need to be ahead of the game and making the news that LPC and NDP must respond to.

7 As a busy mom who regularly gets calls on polling, and knowing I usually hand the phone over to the teens (who usually end up being the ones in the poll who didn't know the name of who war running) I have very little faith in poll. Polls don't matter, elections do. I tend to believe that Tories in Canada suffer from battered wife paranoia. That is, you'all tend to be skittish and easily discouraged. Don't be. Bring down the parliament, campaign for Conservative values in your ridings, and trust in the people. If after everything that's happened still leads to a Grit government, then there's still a silver lining. Quebec is probably gone, which would be blamed entirely on the Grits. This would be unfortunate for you as Canadians, but probably a great thing for Conservatives and the other provinces. Plus, it would make secession for Alberta a good deal more likely!

11 It happened yesterday EXACTLY like we said at work. Martin and Layton said the Liberals voted against the maritimes deal, when they knew damn well that it was stuck in part of the budget along with Kyoto, and the CPC actually ASKED Jack for support and help push the maritimes bill through, and he refused. When the Liberals put the Kyoto and Maritimes together in the budget, we called it in the van on the way home from work, the Liberals knew the CPC would vote against it, then the Libs could say "See, the CPC is against the maritimes....". Now I'm really pissed.......

Not all that different from the old, but that might change as I become more confident with Movable Type. For a lot of folks, Blogger is a blog with training wheels. I bet quite a few are considering a move.

3 Been enjoying your site since I found it through the Captains web site. I don't believe the polls and the movement one bit. A sampling of 1000 is barely three per house of commons seat. They are also carried out by MSM connected groups. Hope our mates in Ontario can "see the light" Keep up the good work.

6 Sorry about that Andrew. The banner is not elastic, so if your window is too narrow, the right column overlays the banner. The middle text column is elastic though, so there should not be any overlaps there. I have Firefox, too. I've normally use a width of something like 1024 for my browser and don't see the overlap. My tracker says less than 20% of the people are using resolutions under 1024 in width, and since the only effect is to overlay the banner, it seemed like a minor thing.

8 Ahhhh - that would be it. I use Sage for my RSS feeds, and it takes up the left-most part of my screen (actually, it's about the same width as the calendar). As you were. =)

11 Thanks for the feedback and for the good wishes, everyone. I feel like I have a real blog now -- no training wheels. One bad thing -- I'm a microbe again in the Ecosystem. Quite a come down from Large Mammal. I'll have to see how that works out overnight at the next refresh.

12 Thanks for changing to the darker blue. Much easier to read now. Personally I probably would center-align or pad the header image to left-align with the left sidebar. Just to get it off the browsers edge a bit. If the banner image were centered, one could start the right sidebar on the same level as the left sidebar. It's true that only a few people have less than 1024 for their browser, but some don't want their browser to cover all of their desktop and leave some desktop space for folders on the right to pull files, links or pix to. That's what I do on my Macs anyways.

13 I only found your other site three weeks ago - loved that one and think the new one is great, congratulations!! I hope the polls are wrong, thought that perhaps they only polled where they thought they would get better results for the Liberals?? I will keep my fingers crossed. I have donated several places already and alerted the local conservatives that my volunteer services are available. I was already a member/volunteer but want to make sure that they are ready. Did anyone else get a flyer in the mail from Stephen Harper? I got one today and returned it within minutes after answering the three questions required, no postage required.

14 Canadians stand poised on the precipice of which way this Country's future fortunes will unfold. In light of what has been revealed, and yet to be revealed at the Gomery Commission, Canadians can no longer watch like common bystanders hypnotized by the grotesque. Too long have all of us turned a blind eye to the way truth and justice in Canada has, in our full view been buried alive with our sanction. Too long have we all been a party to turning away in helplessness shrugging our shoulders, in mute truedeauesque fashion saying to ourselves what can we do to change things at this late hour in Canadian history? We can wake up and recognize that the Liberals have for too long held us in some sort of macabre spell, that they the anointed few, know what's best for Canadians despite taking us all down the path to our sons and daughters destruction. If we continue to rationalize the crimes and misdemeanors of the "natural ruling party", we shall surely realize too late that Democracy here in Canada has also been buried as well, as our truth and justice. If we fail this time we fail all those who have perished before us, who have laid down their a own lives to give us that cherished thing called Democracy. We will have failed all whose who come after us as well, who might have realized the dream our forefather held precision and near to their hearts. Let this not be our final epitaph, that we Canadians let our future be eclipsed by thieves and rogues, clocked in the false righteousness of misguided national unity!
