Michael Ignatieff: No more carbon tax changes

Today Stephane Dion announced subsidies for farmers, fishermen, and truckers, as a way of offsetting the effect of a carbon tax.

So the natural question is whether Canadians can expect more changes.  According to Michael Ignatieff, there won't be any further changes.

MP on Mike Duffy Live, speaking about 's , and the subsidies announced today for farmers; fishermen, and truckers:

I don't envisage any more tweaking [of the carbon tax].  My sense is that...I was in on the formulation of this policy.  It was not on the back of an envelope.  This Harper stuff is an insult.  This was very, very carefully worked out over months and months and months to make sure we had things working.  When we went out into the country and talked to people, they made this suggestion, that we had to do more for farmers and fishermen.  We've listened and responded.  I feel very good about where we are and now I think we're set and we're ready to roll with it.

So the carbon tax is set.  I guess that means we won't get any details on these questions below, or any further adjustments to the carbon tax to address the painful ramifications for Canadians suggested by these questions:

  • How would the federal carbon tax work in conjunction with provincial carbon taxes in British Columbia and Quebec?
  • How will the carbon tariffs work, in terms of the size of the tariff, what countries would be targeted, how the tariff would survive challenges made that international trade laws are being broken, and how Canadians would be compensated for increase cost of imported goods?
  • How will Canadian exports remain competitive if the price of those exports increases significantly because of the cost incurred by Canadian firms doing business under Stephane Dion's carbon tax regime?
